Ian Graham (born February 17, 1967 ) is a retired English snooker player who was a professional player for nine seasons between 1988 and 1997. During this time he reached the quarter-finals of two ranking tournaments and 42nd place in the snooker world rankings .

Career

Graham participated in the WPBSA Pro Ticket Series 88/89 between 1986 and 1987 ; his best result was reaching the quarter-finals in the second event . After losing to Darren Morgan in the round of 16 of the U21 World Amateur Championship in 1987 , he took part in qualifying for the English Amateur Championship in 1988 and with far more success in the professional play-offs . A little later he became a professional player.

Career start and successes

Graham's first professional playing time was quite successful for the Englishman when he was able to qualify for several main rounds and also reached the round of 16 of the English Professional Championship and the final qualifying round for the World Snooker Championship . His best result in a ranking tournament he achieved at the Canadian Masters , where he also reached the round of 16. He immediately placed himself on the world rankings, more precisely on rank 59. The next season went a little better when Graham was able to reach the main round in significantly more tournaments in addition to the final round of World Cup qualifications . In addition, he was able to improve his best result from the previous year when he was defeated at the beginning of the season at the Hong Kong Open in the quarterfinals by Dene O'Kane . The better course of the season was also reflected in the world rankings, as Graham was able to improve by nine places.

Dene O'Kane also crossed Graham's path in the 1990/91 season , when the latter was able to defeat his New Zealand teammate in the final qualifying round of the Snooker World Championship and Graham thus reached the main round of the World Cup for the only time, in which he, however, his first game against Steve James lost. The rest of the season also saw some good results from Graham; so he reached the round of 16 of the Grand Prix and the round of 32 at the Classic , whereas in the non-ranking tournament Benson and Hedges Satellite Championship he was also only eliminated in the round of 16. As a result, Graham was able to improve again on the world rankings, so that he was now ranked 42nd, which he could never beat.

With the following season , however, Graham's form collapsed and the Englishman lost his opening game in numerous tournaments. After all, he reached the second to last qualifying round in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship with a win over Bjørn L'Orange and the round of the last 64 at the Welsh Open with a win over Ken Owers . Only at the Grand Prix he had significantly more success and defeated, among other things Jimmy White and Dene O'Kane before he was defeated in the quarterfinals by Scots Alan McManus . This success could not really compensate for the other failures, so that Graham lost four places on the world rankings and only finished 46th.

End of professional career

Even if Graham reached a few more main rounds in the 1992/93 season , the success did not want to adjust. Only at the British Open could he reach a relatively late round when he lost to James Wattana in the round of 16 . As a result of the season, however, he lost almost ten places in the world rankings and was now in 55th place. After he had only reached three main rounds in the following season, including a non-ranking tournament, this trend intensified and Graham slipped to 70th from.

Since Graham had to play more qualifying games from the 1994/95 season because of his lower world ranking position, he could decide more games for themselves. Nevertheless, he only moved into the main round at the European Open and the British Open and lost in both cases immediately. On the world rankings he had to accept a deterioration of another 25 places. Even if the number of his victories increased again in the next season , he did not reach a single main round, so that he slipped to 115th place. After he did not play any more professional games, he fell to 310th place before losing his professional status in 1997.
