The Wickes British Open 1993 was a snooker tournament of the 1992/93 season , which was held from February 22nd to March 6th in the Assembly Rooms in Derby . For the ninth time, the tournament took place in the city in Central England. The sponsor this year was the DIY and garden center chain Wickes .
Jimmy White , who had won the previous year, made it to the semifinals, but then lost to Steve Davis . Davis then won the tournament by beating James Wattana 10-2 in the final . The Thai lost the British Open final for the second time in a row. For Davis it was the second victory after 1986 and, including the previous tournaments, the fifth victory in the Assembly Rooms .
It was the last time that the tournament, which began in 1980 as the British Gold Cup and became a ranking tournament under the name of the British Open in 1985 , was held in Derby. The following year it moved to Plymouth in the south west of England .
Main tournament
This year there was a record number of participants that was not reached in the following years either. With over 500 registered players, nine qualifying rounds had to be played until 32 players remained. They were drawn into the top 32 of the world rankings , which were set directly for the main tournament.
As before, the first four rounds were played in Best of 9 mode . The semi-finals were no longer Best of 17, but only Best of 11 and could therefore be decided in one instead of two sessions. In the final, however, they stayed with Best of 19 (10 winning frames).
