Tournament course

After the mode was changed with the last edition of the tournament, it remained largely the same for the main round this year: In addition to eight seeded players, eight qualifiers were able to take part in the main round. These sixteen players were divided into four groups of four in the main group stage, in which a simple round- robin tournament was played. At the end of this, a final table was drawn up, the top two of which advanced to the semi-finals. As in the previous year, the semi-finals were also played as a group stage with two groups of four, but these no longer consisted of the best-placed two groups, but of one best-placed from each group. There, too, a single round was played out and at the end of it a final table was drawn up, the first place of which advanced to the final, in which the tournament winner was determined in a single game. Up to and including the semi-finals, each match was played in the best of 3 frames mode , the final then in the best of 17 frames mode .

final

The Welshman Ray Reardon was just experiencing the Indian summer of his career : after he actually had his phase of dominance in the 1970s with six world championship titles, he had reached the final of the snooker world championship the previous year and the Professional Players Tournament against Jimmy White won. At this tournament he was group winner in the first main group stage and in the semifinals, just ahead of last year's winner Steve Davis, he took first place in his group. In the other group, Terry Griffiths , another participant of the previous year's final, finished second, he had to admit defeat to Jimmy White , who came relatively far at this tournament for the first time after several participations.

The beginning of the game was shaped by White, who took the lead 0-2. As a result, Reardon shortened several frames by one frame, but White was able to follow suit immediately. Only when the score was 4: 6, Reardon equalized and shortly afterwards took the lead, before catching up with two more frames to the final score of 9: 6.

In the main qualification, another seven players joined in, so that three groups of four and one group of three were formed, each made up of two group winners from the preliminary round and at least one other player. Again, a simple round-robin tournament was played and then a table was set up, with the two best-placed players advancing into the main round. All games took place in the best of 3 frames mode .
