The 1994 British Open was a snooker tournament of the 1993/94 season that was held in Plymouth from March 30th to April 7th . This edition marked a deep turning point in tournament history. After 9 years as a ranking tournament in Derby (including previous tournaments even 14 years) the British Open had moved from the Midlands to the south-west coast of England. There were also some other changes, for example the tournament was postponed by a month and thus became the last tournament before the World Cup . In addition, the tournament had to do without a name sponsor in this and the following years.
Defending champion Steve Davis made it to the semi-finals, where there was a new edition of the previous year's final with James Wattana . This time the Thai prevailed. He reached the final for the third time in a row, but this time again he failed to win the tournament. This time it was Ronnie O'Sullivan who defeated him 9: 4. In his second year as a professional, it was the fourth tournament win for the Englishman, the third of this season.
Main tournament
After four qualifying rounds, in which the players from 33rd place in the world rankings had participated, 32 players were left. The top 32 were placed directly for the main tournament, the 32 qualifiers were drawn for the first round. The mode remained unchanged until the semi-finals, but the final was only played over 9 winning frames ( best-of-17 ) instead of over 10 as in the previous year.
