The Dubai Duty Free Classic 1993 was a snooker tournament for the 1993/94 season that was held from October 4th to 10th at the Al Nasr Sports Club in Dubai . It was the fifth edition of the ranking tournament.

Defending champion John Parrott , who had won the last two Dubai Classics, got stuck in the round of 16 this time. Last year's finalist Stephen Hendry , however, reached the final for the fourth time in this tournament and met his old rival Steve Davis once again . The new edition of the final from 1990 went back to Hendry, the Scot won 9: 3. With three titles he became the record winner of the Dubai Classic.

Prize money / ranking points

Even with the mode changed, the prize money was roughly the same as last year. Almost £ 2,000 less was available. The win bonus of £ 40,000 remained unchanged, but behind it there were in some cases significantly less until the round of 16. However, from the last 32 onwards, the premiums rose again. Unlike in the previous year, the players in the 7th qualifying round got nothing, only the last 128 got money. In terms of the points for the world rankings , all 32 participants in the main tournament each received 400 points more, including nothing compared to 1993.

Main tournament

There was a fundamental change in the tournament mode compared to the previous year. Instead of the top 32 in the world rankings , only the top 16 were selected for the main tournament. In two additional qualifying rounds, the field of the remaining participants was therefore reduced until 16 more main round players were determined. They were drawn to the top 16. The main tournament was therefore one round shorter. The match length ( best of 9 to best of 17 in the final) did not change.

final

For the 15th time Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry faced each other in a final of a professional tournament. Davis lost his lead in the world rankings to Hendry in 1990 and last year he even dropped to fourth place, but the Englishman still scored 8: 7. He had won three of the last 5 finals, but Hendry had been successful at the International Open earlier in the year . Last season both had won four titles. Still, it was a one-sided final. Hendry quickly led 3-0 before Davis made the first frame win. Then the Scot pulled away frame by frame with many high breaks and even won the contested last frame of the afternoon. He went into the evening with a 7-1 lead and with a 136-point break he immediately made it clear that the win would only be a matter of time. Davis struggled and was able to shorten it by two frames, but then the Scot made the 9: 3 victory with a second century break . It was Hendry's tournament: In five editions of the Dubai Classic as a ranking tournament, Hendry was in the final four times and had won three times.
