The Grafenort Castle ( Polish: Zamek w Gorzanowie ) is the ruin of a castle in Gorzanów (German Grafenort ) in the powiat Kłodzki ( Glatz district ) in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland. It was considered to be one of the most important castles in art history in the historic County of Glatz .

history

On the site of today's castle there was a courtyard with a residential tower as early as 1350 . From around 1540 the estate was owned by the von Ratschin family. From around 1559, a renaissance fortified house covered with sgraffito decorations was added to the courtyard. Remains of the original residential tower and the fortified house can still be seen architecturally in today's castle.

In 1624 Baron Johann Arbogast von Annenberg bought the estate. He had a St. George's Chapel built. In 1651 the estate passed through marriage to Johann Friedrich von Herberstein , who had the park further developed. The castle was rebuilt in early baroque style according to plans by Lorenzo Nicello, extended to the west and closed off on the courtyard side with a loggia that frames the castle tower on both sides. From 1672 the facility was expanded to include a farm yard.

In the first half of the 19th century the court experienced a cultural heyday and had a famous court theater. From 1880 the castle was open to the public and became an attraction of the County of Glatz . The court theater continued to operate as part of the Bad Landeck theater. After 1945 the castle was placed under a preservation order, but fell into disrepair. A foundation has been taking care of the renovation of the castle since 2012.

Castle Park

The park is one of the earliest baroque gardens in Silesia. From the middle of the 17th century, Count von Herberstein had it laid out according to Italian, Austrian and Moravian models. According to a representation from 1738, the palace and garden were connected by the Sala terrena, which north of the lpen can only be found in Palais Waldstein in Prague. From the hall you got into the garden which was divided by hedges into areas in which stucco decorations. Wall fountain and figures a garden design of Italian Renaissance gardens varied. To the east was the so-called summer garden with orangery. Shooting range and Melusin join. Beyond the central axis of the garden, there was a ground floor with a magnificent fountain and a small pleasure house, which probably served as a dining room.

Around 1800 the garden was redesigned to a landscape park with lawns and groups of trees. From 1810, Johann Hieronymus Herberstein had the park redesigned in a similar way to Schloss Eggenberg . The facility was extended to the south as far as the Moschenhof. Alleys connected the park with the Ratschinhof and the chapel on the Antoniberg.

In the 19th century, the publicly accessible park became a popular destination. The garden pavilion and bathhouse have also fallen into disrepair over the past few decades, but have been renovated since 2012.
