final

Ken Doherty had made it into the top 12 in the world for the first time in his third year as a professional, he had already won four professional titles, but three of them in tournaments without the best players. At the beginning of the year he had won his first ranking tournament with the Welsh Open , in the final he had defeated Alan McManus 9: 7. Although the Scot was already in 6th place after three years as a professional, he had only won the Masters qualification , a tournament without the top 16, so far .

McManus took the initiative from the start, taking the lead 2-1 and 4-2, but Doherty equalized each time. The Scot increased the 5: 4 at the end of the session to 6: 4 at the beginning of the evening session, but again he could not hold the lead. This continued until 8: 8, when Doherty took the lead for the first time in a contested frame. McManus now absolutely had to win and managed to equalize. This was the second time since 1986 that the decision frame was made (at that time still in the Best of 17 mode ). This frame was contested again, in the end Ken Doherty got the upper hand with 85:43 and won his fifth title with a 10: 9 victory.
