final
Stephen Hendry had been the pre-season standout player. The number 1 in the world had won the world championship and three other titles and was thus the favorite. But he had also lost two finals: the Scottish Masters in 1994 against Ken Doherty and the Irish Masters in 1995 against Peter Ebdon in the spring . In the personal balance of the two players it was 3: 3. Although Hendry took the initiative in the beginning, he couldn't leave Ebdon behind at first. The English not only equaled his 2-0 lead, but also took a 3-2 lead. Hendry then also won three frames in a row and thus had a 5-3 advantage at the end of the first session. But then the beginning of the evening session brought the preliminary decision. Ebdon didn't get into the game properly and lost three frames in a row. With an 8-3 lead, Hendry was only one frame missing from victory. Ebdon fought twice for a frame, then the Scot finished with a century break to 9: 5 success. After 1989 and 1990 he won the tournament for the third time.
