The 1996 European Open was a snooker tournament of the 1995/96 season that was held from February 25th to March 3rd in the Mediterranean Conference Center in Valletta . After three years in Belgium, the tournament went to Malta for the first time . The Malta Grand Prix has been held there with great success since 1994 . After two editions in December, the tournament was postponed again to spring.
The attempt to defend the title of the two-time winner Stephen Hendry was stopped in the round of 16. Last year's finalist John Parrott made it to the final again, where he met Peter Ebdon . Parrott won 9-7, claiming the third title at the tournament.
Prize money / world ranking points
Over £ 25,000 more was in the distribution this year. However, it was not the participants in the main tournament who benefited from this, for whom nothing changed, but the players in the last three qualifying rounds. Between £ 255 and £ 515 there was more if you made it to the bottom of 96.

Main tournament
The main field consisted of 32 players. As in the previous year, there were four wildcard matches before the first round : four local players were given the opportunity to qualify for the main tournament.
Wildcard round
The games of the wildcard round took place at the start of the tournament on March 10th. The four lowest placed qualifiers in the world rankings had to face four Maltese amateurs. All four professionals were able to prevail and thus moved into the first main round. Game mode for the four games was Best of 9 .
WC = wildcard Final roundThe top 16 of the world rankings were set for round one. Then there were the four winners of the wildcard games and the 12 remaining qualifiers. They were drawn to the top 16. The mode in the final round remained unchanged. finalThis was the fourth time that John Parrott was in a final of the European Open, the last time he won it in 1990 . Last year he had lost the final. Peter Ebdon was in the final of the tournament for the first time, but he had won the Malta Grand Prix earlier in the season on the Mediterranean island . They had split the previous eight matches 4: 4, and for the first time the two Englishmen met in a final. Until the first break, the game was evenly balanced, by the end of the first session, Ebdon had developed a 5: 3 lead, also thanks to three 80s breaks. In the evening he expanded to 6: 3, then Parrott won three frames in a row with three high breaks and he equalized. The next frame went back to Ebdon, but again Parrott equalized, took the lead for the second time in the match and with the third frame win in a row, he completed the 9: 7 victory. With three titles he was again the sole record winner of the tournament before Stephen Hendry .
Century breaks12 players played 19 breaks of at least 100 points during the tournament. In the round of 16, Andy Hicks managed the highest break with 137 points, which earned him a bonus of £ 2,400 . In qualifying, 7 players each managed a century break , with Jason Wallace receiving £ 1,200 for the 131-point break . From the round of the last 32 onwards, 5 players made 12 three-digit breaks, each of the five being successful at least twice.
