The European Open 2004 was a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 2003/04 season , which took place in Malta from March 1 to 6, 2004 . The tournament had already taken place three times before on the Mediterranean island in Valletta , this time Portomaso in St. Julian's was the venue. It was the 12th and final edition of the European Open, but the following year they were replaced by the Malta Cup in the same place.
Last year, Ronnie O'Sullivan won the tournament in Torquay, England , but this time he only reached the quarter-finals. The qualifier Stephen Maguire survived after two qualifying rounds also all rounds of the main tournament and won his first professional title. He defeated Jimmy White 9-3 in the final.
Prize money / ranking points
After having been below previous years in the previous two years, the prize pool rose this year to a new high of £ 250,000 to £ 400,000 . The additional money went on: The winner received £ 4,000 and thus 10% more, whoever was eliminated in the second qualifying round received almost three times the amount of the previous year.

final
Stephen Maguire made it into a final for the first time in his fifth year as a professional . Jimmy White , on the other hand, could look back on a career spanning more than 20 years, winning 27 professional titles and the European Open once in 1992 . But it hadn't been successful for 5 years. This time too he was on the losing track from the start. Maguire won four of the first five frames with high breaks, two of them over 100 points. Only when the 6th frame was counted as lost after three misses for White did the Englishman wake up and then win his first hard-fought frame. But in the second session Maguire restored the lead of 6 frames and defended it until the 9-3 victory.
