The 1993 Humo European Open was a snooker tournament of the 1992/93 season , which was held from February 15 to 21 in the Matchroom Schijnpoort in Antwerp . For the second time in a row, the tournament took place in Belgium, but it moved from the south to the big city in the north. The Belgian magazine Humo appeared for the first time as a sponsor of the event.
Defending champion Jimmy White already lost in Round 1 to 17-year-old talent Ronnie O'Sullivan . In the final, however, there was another clash between the great opponents Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis . Former Davis won another win with a clear 10: 4, the second tournament win this season.
This tournament was brought forward by one month compared to previous years. The next season the tournament took place three months earlier in December. Thus the tournament took place twice in the same calendar year.
Main tournament
Eight qualifying rounds were necessary to determine one half of the field. The players from 33rd place in the world rankings played the 32 qualifiers for the main tournament on several dates. The top 32 were set for Antwerp, the other 32 players were drawn. The tournament mode remained unchanged until the semi-finals, but for the second time after 1990 the final was extended and played on 10 winning frames ( best of 19 ). After that, the tournament finally returned to best-of-17 finals.
