The 1993 Welsh Open was a snooker tournament of the 1992/93 season that was held between January 21 and February 6, 1993 in Newport . The tournament, which was newly introduced last year, was held for the second time in the Newport Center of the southern Welsh coastal town.
World champion and defending champion Stephen Hendry was eliminated this time in the round of 16. His successor was the Irish champions Ken Doherty , who defeated Alan McManus 9: 7 in the final. It was the first ranked title of his career.
Prize money / world ranking points
The prize money distributed increased by £ 20,000 compared to the first edition of the tournament. The winner got £ 2,500 more, and the other round bonuses increased accordingly. Unlike last year, the losers in the final qualifying round also received a bonus of £ 250.
The points for the world rankings had been reformed before this season. Instead of individual points for the last 32 there were points and 3,600 points for victory down to the second qualifying round.

Final round
The top 32 of the world rankings were set for the main tournament. The 32 players who had prevailed in the qualification last year were drawn to them.
final
Both finalists were in their third year as a professional and both had experience in the final. Ken Doherty had already won titles in two professional tournaments without ranking points and earlier in the season at the Grand Prix he had only just lost 9:10. The only encounter between the two of them the year before had won Alan McManus . The game started evenly, but after the scores of 2: 2 and 3: 3, Doherty was able to play out a 5: 3 lead at the end of the first session. In the evening, McManus kept coming up to one frame, but Doherty immediately afterwards restored the gap to 2 frames. The Irishman defended the lead throughout the session and then finished to 9: 7. With this, he won his first rankings on the third attempt.
