The BetVictor Welsh Open 2016 was a world ranking tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour 2015/16 and took place from February 15 to 21, 2016 at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff , Wales .

The Englishman Ronnie O'Sullivan won the 25th edition of the Welsh Open with a 9-5 win over the Australian Neil Robertson .

The defending champion was four-time world champion John Higgins , who was knocked out 1: 4 in the round of 16 against local hero Michael White .

Ronnie O'Sullivan's 146 break in Round 1 against fellow countryman Barry Pinches was bizarre . He was already on the maximum course when he purposely switched to pink instead of black. He justified his decision by saying that the prize money of 10,000 British pounds was too low for him.

In the quarterfinals against Neil Robertson, Ding Junhui managed the 117th official maximum break. It was already the sixth maximum for the Chinese .
