Sam Baird (born June 17, 1988 in Uffculme , Devon ) is an English snooker player .

Career

Beginnings

After Baird had won the Silver Waistcoat Tour in 2007, he also won the Golden Waistcoat Tour in 2009 . He also won the Pontin's Businessland U-21 series in 2008 . His greatest triumph as an amateur was winning the EASB Pro Ticket Tour series in 2009, which earned him a starting place on the Main Tour for the 2009/10 snooker season .

First year as a professional

He achieved his first professional victory at the first event of the Pro Challenge Series with a 4: 3 against Jamie Cope . Throughout his debut season, he was unable to qualify for the Round of 32 at any tournament. In qualifying for the China Open 2010 he achieved his first success with victories over Craig Steadman , Liu Song and Ian McCulloch . At the end of the season, his results were not enough to stay on the Main Tour.

Amateur time

In the following season, Baird (now again as an amateur) took part in several tournaments of the PTC series 2010/11 , but he never got beyond the round of 64. He also took part in the qualification for the World Cup, as you could register for this tournament as an amateur. With victories over the professionals Reanne Evans , Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon and Alfred Burden , he reached the penultimate, fourth qualifying round, in which he was only just defeated by 9:10 to Mike Dunn . Only the last black ball decided the game.

By reaching first place in the EASB Pro Ticket Tour 2010/11 , Baird finally qualified again for the Main Tour season 2011/12 .

In his first game again as a professional he was defeated in qualifying for the PTC Event 1 with 0: 4 to the Scots Graeme Dott . In the next round, the round of 16, he was defeated by Robert Milkins 2-4 . At the World Open he lost 5-3 to Mike Dunn in the second qualifying round after defeating Tony Drago 5-4 . At the China Open he lost just 4: 5 to Dechawat Poomjaeng in the first qualifying round .

At the end of the season he achieved a sensation: In the first qualifying round of the World Snooker Championship he defeated Chen Zhe, who was 7 positions better, 10: 7. In the second followed Peter Lines , he was also better set and still lost in the last possible frame with 10: 9.
