The Bank of Beijing China Open 2012 was a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 2011/12 season , which took place from March 26 to April 1, 2012 in Beijing .
The defending champion was the Englishman Judd Trump , who lost 3-5 to Stephen Lee in the quarterfinals . The current number one Mark Selby retired from the tournament after his clear first round win (5-0) against the Chinese wildcard player Li Hang due to a neck injury in order to be fit for the upcoming World Cup . With that, Ding Junhui advanced one round without a fight. In the quarter-finals there, he prevailed 5: 2 against "Captain" Ali Carter . He had previously defeated the Chinese wildcard player and Shaun Murphy captive Lu Ning 5-1. As the third wildcard player and fourth Chinese participant in the first round, Jin Long clearly lost 1: 5 against world number two Mark Williams . The 2002 world champion, Peter Ebdon , was in 28th place, able to prevail in the round of 16 against reigning world champion John Higgins and in the quarterfinals against number 4, Neil Robertson , and to advance to the semifinals, where he had to compete against the Chinese Ding.
The German Masters Champion of 2012, Ronnie O'Sullivan had difficulties in the first round against the number 24, Marcus Campbell , to make it 5: 4 in the round of 16, but was able to defeat Mark Williams with 5: 1. In his quarter-final match against the Scottish Stephen Maguire it was 62:62 on points in the deciding frame. Then the decision had to be made by the “ re-spotted black ”, who ran into the middle via a double gang after a fluke from Maguire. O´Sullivan, surprised but smiling at this incredible thrust, congratulated the lucky Scot on his entry into the semi-finals, where he met the winner of the PTC Grand Finals 2012 Stephen Lee. He eliminated this 6-2 and was in the final.
In the second semifinals, the 2005 winner , Ding Junhui, and the 2009 winner , Peter Ebdon, faced each other. After the first 4 frames, the Englishman was still 1: 3 behind when he won 5 frames in a row after the break and made it 6: 3 in the final against Stephen Maguire. At the last meeting of the two in September 2011 at PTC Event 5 , the Englishman was able to prevail in the first round with 4: 2 against the Scot.
With Ding, the last remaining participant from the host country left the tournament.
The final was played by the two opponents Peter Ebdon and Stephen Maguire over the full distance of 19 frames. After winning the first frame from Ebdon, Maguire was able to equalize in the second, but the Englishman then pulled away with 4 more frames and his highest Century Break of 124 at this tournament and ended the first session with a clear 5-1 lead. Nevertheless, the games were fiercely competitive and very protracted, so that for the first time ever in a ranking tournament finale, the afternoon session was interrupted after 6 frames, so that the players had enough break. At the beginning of the evening session, the Scot was able to make up another frame. From then on, both players took turns with the frame gains more or less until Maguire could level with three wins in a row to 8: 8. The Ebdon Century in the following frame, which was the 300th of his career, again made up for Maguire. In the following decision frame, after a successful starter from Maguire, it already looked like a march when he had to give up the game after 24 points and clear the table for Ebdon, who secured his second title at the China Open after 2009 with a break of 62. For Ebdon it was the last professional title of his career.
Mark Selby, who only played one game in this tournament, was still able to secure the bonus bonus for the highest break with 139 points.
