The China Open 2002 was a snooker tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 2001/02 season , which took place in Shanghai from February 24 to March 3 . For the third edition of the tournament, it was the third venue.

The two-time tournament winner Ronnie O'Sullivan missed his third win, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. His final opponent from last time, Mark Williams , reached the final again. The Welshman, number 1 in the world rankings this season , secured the title this time with 9: 8 against Anthony Hamilton .

After this edition, the China Open was discontinued and there were no professional tournaments in Asia for two years. It was not until 2005 that the tournament was reissued.

Prize money / ranking points

The prize money was a huge increase from the previous edition by almost half to £ 450,000 . The winner got £ 12,500 more and even finishing the bottom 64 was up more than £ 1,000. However, only 96 players received bonuses - in 2000 there had been 128 - because this time there were fewer participants and thus one fewer qualifying round. The entry fee was £ 1,200 instead of £ 500.

The value of the tournament developed similarly. For the two finalists there were even 800 and 200 points less for the world rankings . For the other placements there were sometimes several hundred points more. The minimum number of points for all participants was 200, in the preseason - with a higher number of participants - only 189 points were awarded.

Wildcard round

As in the previous season's tournament, the Chinese association was once again able to award two wildcards to local players. The two Chinese competed against the two lowest placed qualifiers in the world rankings and played for a place in the main round. For the second time in a row, Cai Jianzhong received a wild card, but he never made it into the main tournament later and never made the leap into professional business. The second wild card went to Ding Junhui , it was his first participation in a professional tournament and the start of a very successful professional career, even if he lost that game.

The games of the wildcard round took place at the start of the tournament on February 24th. Game mode for the two games was Best of 9 .
