final
On September 20, 1997, the two Englishmen Steve Davis and Jimmy White met in the final , both of whom had been in the tournament since the first round. Despite his advanced age, Davis had knocked the dominator of the 1990s, Stephen Hendry , out of the tournament with a white wash after he had already survived the first round with a white wash, and then had the final participation with a 6: 1 win over the Thai James Wattana , who had played a maximum in the previous round. White, on the other hand, fought his way to the quarterfinals with a win in the Decider , where he defeated Mark Williams from Welsh . Then he managed a rare white wash over Ronnie O'Sullivan , so that he too was in the final.
Davis - who was world champion six times in the 1980s - had the better start to the match and was able to win the first three frames with a 63 break before his opponent Jimmy White - who played six times between 1982 and 1995 The final of the World Cup stood and could not win a single time - also with the help of a 63 break and a 58 break. But Davis also countered and restored the old distance, where he still played a 50 break. White was able to shorten it to 6: 4 before Davis won the last frame with 64:41 and thus the match.
