qualification
With the exception of four games, the qualifying round was played from February 9 to 11, 2016 at the Metrodome in the English city of Barnsley . As in the International Championship 2015 , the games of the defending champion and the world champion as well as the two best-placed Chinese players (games 1, 44, 60 and 64) were played at the beginning of the main tournament in Beijing. The best-of-9 mode applied to all games .
The biggest surprises of the qualification were the elimination of the top 16 players Mark Allen and Mark Williams against Mitchell Mann and Martin O'Donnell respectively . With Adam Duffy an amateur took the chance to participate in the main round of a professional tournament. He defeated number 36 in the world rankings Thepchaiya Un-Nooh .
The game between Kyren Wilson and Anthony Hamilton was remarkable . From the second to the seventh frame, the two players achieved six century breaks in a row (Wilson four, Hamilton two). This meant a new record, there had already been a series of five Centurys twice in professional snooker. In the sixth Century Wilson reached exactly 100 points, he also won the match with a total of 5: 3. The encounter between Rod Lawler and Hammad Miah ended in the tightest of possible results. When the score was 4: 4, the decision frame also ended in a draw. Lawler only secured qualification with the black ball ("Respotted Black") back on.
