Haidian ( Chinese  海淀 区 , Pinyin Hǎidiàn qū ) is a district of the Chinese capital Beijing .

Haidian is located northwest of the city center and has an area of ​​430.73 km². In 1990 censuses, Haidian had 1,442,776 inhabitants, 2,240,124 in 2000, and 3,280,670 in 2010, making it the second most populous district in Beijing.

Haidian is home to numerous universities, including Beijing's two most prestigious universities, Peking University and Tsinghua University .

The district is also home to Beijing's "Silicon Valley" Zhongguancun . Important high-tech companies and many electronics shopping centers characterize the streetscape of Zhongguancun Dajie and the adjacent streets.

Due to the large number of students and foreign companies, the ethnic diversity is much higher than in most other parts of the city. The per capita income is also very high by Chinese standards and was CNY 18,479 in 2008 , around € 2,000.
