Mark Joyce (born August 11, 1983 in Walsall , England ) is an English snooker player who has been playing on the Snooker Main Tour since 2016 . After being in the final of the Masters Qualifying Event in 2008 , he reached the final of a ranking tournament for the first time at the Riga Masters 2019 . While losing those two games, Joyce won several amateur tournaments throughout his career.

Career

Amateur years

Joyce first attracted attention when he won the EBSA U19 European Snooker Championship in 2001 after victories over Mark Allen and Judd Trump, among others . After an unsuccessful participation in the Merseyside Professional in the same year, he reached the final of the EBSA U19 European Snooker Championship again in 2002 , but lost to Robert Shanks . In the next few years Joyce took part mostly unsuccessfully in editions of the WSA Open Tour and the Challenge Tour as well as in the qualification for the snooker world championship. Most of the time he left early; In 2004 he reached a semi-final and a quarter-finals in two tournaments of the Challenge Tour, at the Snooker World Championship his best result was participation in the fifth qualifying round. He had also reached the quarter-finals of the Pontins Spring Open in 2004 .

In the 2005/06 season Joyce took part in the Pontin's International Open Series (PIOS for short) with some success ; he reached, among other things, a semi-finals and two finals, of which he lost one to Colm Gilcreest and won one against James Leadbetter . At amateur level, he made it into the round of 32 at the European Championships and the IBSF World Grand Prix , reached the quarter-finals at two tournaments in the Pontins Pro / Am series and the semi- finals at the Dutch Open . He also qualified for the final of the English Amateur Championship , in which he was crowned the winner with an 8-3 win over Martin O'Donnell . Via the PIOS ranking, Joyce finally qualified for the Snooker Main Tour .

First professional years

Joyce's first professional season was the 2006/07 season , which was relatively passable for him with several appearances in a round of 64 and one in the round of 32 in the Masters qualifying event . At the amateur level, Joyce also took part in various tournaments, here two quarterfinals were his best results. In the world rankings he placed end of the season on rank 73. Approximately similarly ran the next season , when he three times was eliminated in the Round of 80 and Round of 64, and in addition to reaching the main group stage at the Grand Prix be best result was participation in the Round of 48 of the UK Championship . Meanwhile, he took part in the tournaments of the Pontins Pro / Am series with little success at the amateur level . On the world rankings he improved Joyce to 59th place, which he secured to remain on the professional tour.

With three defeats in one round of the last 80 and four defeats in one round of the last 64 and participation in the round of 48 at the Shanghai Masters , the 2008/09 season was also largely similar to the previous season. However, he reached his first professional final at the Masters Qualifying Event , which he lost to Judd Trump . At the amateur level, Joyce again took part in the Pontins Pro / Am tournaments and reached a semi-finals. He also made it to the quarter-finals of the 2008 English Open Championship. On the world rankings he was able to improve marginally to 57th place.

Also in the 2009/10 season Joyce was eliminated mainly in the round of 80 or in the round of 64; In addition to some good results in the Pro Challenge Series, there were two participations in a round of the last 48 and reaching the round of 32 at the Grand Prix . At the amateur level, he reached three round of 16 in the Pontins Pro / Am series. He was also able to maintain his level on the world rankings; he lost one place and was now ranked 58th.

Promotion to the top 40

With the 2010/11 season and the introduction of the Players Tour Championship , the number of tournaments increased and Joyce was eliminated from most of the tournaments in the round of 64 at the earliest. However, he mostly had to admit defeat in this or in the round of the last 32, so that he only reached the second round twice. He succeeded on the one hand in his defeat in the same round at the fifth event of the Players Tour Championship and on the other hand in his quarter-finals at the UK Championship . At the amateur level, he reached the quarter-finals at the Pink Ribbon Tournament , a charity event. On the world rankings, he was able to improve to 42nd place. A few weeks after making his quarter-finals at the UK Championship, Joyce was caught in a brawl which resulted in him being hospitalized with a broken eye socket, broken elbow and visual impairment for some time.

The following season was mixed, however, as Joyce only reached the round of 16 at the Paul Hunter Classic and only in two other tournaments also the round of 32. Even winning the Pink Ribbon against Michael Holt didn't change the fact that he slipped to 59th place in the world rankings. The next season was better again; In addition to numerous rounds of the last 32, Joyce reached the round of 16 at the UK Championship and the quarterfinals at both the Kay Suzanne Memorial Trophy and the Scottish Open , both of which were PTC tournaments at the time. In this he was also eliminated from the Pink Ribbon . On the world rankings, he improved again to 42nd place.

Despite multiple participations in a round of the last 64, Joyce reached a round of the last 32 only four times during the 2013/14 season , in which three quarters of all cases were eliminated. Only at the World Open did he get past this round and made it to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Marco Fu . The other results, however, were modest; Several times he lost his opening game, whereas he was often eliminated in the round of the last 64. At the amateur level, he lost his opening game at the Vienna Open . Nevertheless, he improved to rank 38 at the end of the season.

Years in the 40s of the world rankings

In the 2014/15 season Joyce reached the round of the last 64 more often, but he came again only four times to the round of 32, where he was also eliminated three times. Only at the Australian Goldfields Open shortly after the start of the season did he reach the round of 16 and lost to Stuart Bingham . In the meantime Joyce had placed 31st in the world rankings, but at the end of the season he had slipped to 47th. But in the following season he survived the round of the last 64 in almost half of all tournaments and was eliminated twice in the round of the last 32 and in the round of 16. But he achieved his best result at the German Masters , where he made it to the quarter-finals. By the end of the season he improved to 42nd place.

But in the 2016/17 season he only played ten times in one round of the last 64 of 17 tournaments beyond this round before he was eliminated at the International Championship in the round of 32 and at the China Open in the round of 16. On the other hand, he reached the quarterfinals at the amateur level at the Vienna Open and had to admit defeat to fellow professional Nigel Bond . He lost seven places on the world rankings. Much better, however, went the next season when he survived the round of 64 in eight of nineteen tournaments and was eliminated twice in the round of 32 and three times in the round of 16. A total of three times, at the Riga Masters , the Paul Hunter Classic and the UK Championship , he even made it to the round of 16, but lost there each time. As a result, he improved to 42nd place in the world rankings over the season.

But in the 2018/19 season , Joyce again had a form low; he won only six of 17 opening games and thus only reached the round of the last 32 twice, in which he was also eliminated. His victory over Mark King in the final of the Vienna Open could not help . In the world rankings he slipped to 54th place. The next season he started with a big surprise when he reached the final of a ranking tournament at the Riga Masters for the first time in his career, even if he had to admit defeat to Yan Bingtao there. The further course of the season was similar to the previous season with its numerous opening defeats; Only three more times he reached a round of the last 32 until the break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic . It did not look better at the amateur level either; at the Pink Ribbon he was eliminated in the round of 64.
