The 2002 EBSA U19 European Snooker Championship was a snooker tournament hosted by the European Billiards and Snooker Association . The sixth edition of the Junior European Championship took place in April 2002 in the Ivy Rooms in Carlow, Ireland .
Robert Shanks from Scotland won the title. He defeated Mark Joyce from England 6-3 in the final .
Final round
For the knockout phase of the tournament, which started with the round of 16, 13 players from the British Isles, two German and one Dutch player, qualified.
The defending champion Mark Joyce made it into the final for the second time. Robert Shanks was the tournament surprise, at his first participation in the finals at an international tournament, he had only submitted one frame. The Englishman took the first frame from him, but then Shanks decided the endgame. After equalizing, he established the lead with a century break and then expanded it to 5: 1. Joyce could only save one frame before the Scot finished to 6-2. Shanks did not take advantage of the success and gave up his snooker ambitions after the following year, in which he was once again U19 Vice European Champion. Mark Joyce, on the other hand, made the leap to the Main Tour in 2006 and pursued a long-lasting professional career.
