The 1997 EBSA U19 European Snooker Championship was the first junior championship of the European Billiards and Snooker Association . The snooker tournament took place in Saint Helier on the Channel Island of Jersey .

Thomas "TJ" Dowling became the first European junior champion. In the final, the Irishman had the upper hand over the Englishman Michael Holt with 6: 3 .

Final round

8 players from 6 countries qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament. In the knockout process, they determined the junior European champion.

TJ Dowling came to the tournament as the reigning Irish U17 and U19 champion as a great Irish talent, but at the age of 16 he still had little international experience. The Englishman Michael Holt , on the other hand, was a few months before his 19th birthday. He had already started taking part in the professional tour the year before and had already reached the last 128 at the German Open . Nevertheless, the young Irishman prevailed 6: 3. He then became a national amateur champion . Although Dowling won two more national titles 18 years apart, he remained an amateur. Holt, on the other hand, was able to establish himself as a professional and was successful for many years as a top 32 player.
