The list of fountains in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district of Berlin is a detailed overview of the fountains in the public space of the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district . Wells that are out of order or no longer available are also included, but not simple hand pumps.

The list contains 30 objects and is based on the Internet presentation of the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing about the public fountains in Tempelhof-Schöneberg (30 systems are listed here, as of August 2018), and on other sources.

overview

In Tempelhof-Schöneberg, 30 fountains enliven the public spaces and green spaces. According to the Senate, there are a total of 270 functioning ornamental fountains and sea fountains in Berlin, the maintenance of which was taken over by Berliner Wasserbetriebe from 2017 onwards.

Sculpture by Fee Frank

An oval mushroom, surrounded by twelve sculptures, stands in a basin that is only blurredly delimited from the surrounding area and lined with rough or natural stones. The water emerges at the tip of the mushroom as a small fountain, falls like a veil over the edges of the cover shell and relates the individual figures to one another: the Berlin window -gazer who scrutinizes the passers-by in the direction of the subway station, a lying youth, a sitting and a reclining girl, an old woman almost hidden behind the water veil, a seated woman and a group of putti with a greyhound, as a humorous allusion to the Neptune fountain and the dogs of Friedrich II designed by Schadow. Waldemar Grzimek had designed three more figures, but could no longer do them To run. He died in 1984.

Christian Höpfner created the seated couple and the standing young man together with Hartmut Bonk. The two non-representational sculptures, which border the front of the fountain on the left and right and allegorically stand for the female and male principle, were made by Fee Franck.

Originally, the fountain was framed by flower beds, which were replaced by multi-colored paving based on patterns from the plant ornaments once created by Encke in order to provide more space for strollers. The square was redesigned in 1957 according to modernist principles, but restored in its original form in 1979 as part of a redesign taking into account monument conservation requirements. In 1994/1995, the last essential step was the repair of the fountain with the large fountain, the visual reference point of all the streets leading to the square, visible from afar.

The square was rebuilt from 2006 to 2007 with the aim of connecting the large triangular central island to the eastern sidewalk and thus improving the mobility for pedestrians and the quality of stay in this local center. On July 5, 2007, the converted square was reopened. In the place of the former Kaiser Wilhelm monument, a light fountain system was installed, new pavement paved, bicycle bars and benches with stainless steel feet, nostalgic bollards and a protective grille were set up.

Four fountains bubble up from seven square stainless steel elements, which are lined up in the natural stone slab area of the square at a distance of 1.60 m. The changing water height from a few centimeters to a height of 1.80 m and the different colored lighting in the dark give the facility a varied appearance and give the popular shopping area a new look.

The feed takes place via a deep well, from which all other water points in the cemetery are supplied. Excess water from the well basin is drained to the "Krummen Pfuhl" via an overflow basin. After technical modernization, the well was put back into operation in early July 2008 after a long shutdown.

The drinking fountains of the water company

overview

Charlottenburg Kurfürstendamm 225 drinking fountain type 2

The municipal supplier, Berliner Wasserbetriebe , has developed two types of drinking fountains and installed them in public places, preferably in heavily frequented areas, throughout Berlin's urban area. At the end of 2016, a map showed 32 installation locations. The free and touchless refreshment directly from the water pipe is popular with strollers, shoppers and tourists. Even dogs can find refreshment in the drainage area. The wells installed on the streets and squares are only operated between May and October due to the risk of frost.

Type 1: The small one-meter-high pillars with a diameter of about 40 centimeters, cast from bronze , show five reliefs on top of each other on topics of the history of Berlin in their lower part . The designs come from the designer Siegfried Kaiser, the first models were created in 1985. The water bowl is shaped like a basket and covered with a grid. A small jet of water constantly rises from a brass ball on the side. Technical measures inside the column guarantee the best drinking water quality.

Type 2: The 105 centimeter high pillars, cast from aluminum , are visually subdivided into five equally high segments by cross markings and have a slightly oval cross-section, the design comes from the Berlin designer Marcus Botsch. On one side of the upper edge is a flat bowl with a diameter of 50 centimeters, from the center of which a fine jet of water also rises steadily. This type, also known as the Berlin drinking fountain, has no ornaments, but looks extremely elegant and is also suitable for installation in the interior of larger companies.

Fr. Type 2 drinking fountain Breslauer Platz
2018 With the first installation decisions of the district office in 2017, the construction of a drinking fountain based on the “Vienna model” was favored. There was then a long period of disagreement between the district officials and a citizens' initiative at Breslauer Platz about the equipment and the exact location . This resulted in the most cost-effective solution of a "mouth sprinkler" from BWB.
