List of street fountains in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of street fountains in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf is an overview of the currently existing fountains in the districts. This list is part of the article Street Fountain in Berlin .

overview

Number and forms

In 1951 a guideline number of 3500 inhabitants per well was set. In the 1960s, this guide number was reduced: with the current population, 223 (1500 inhabitants) to 134 emergency water wells (2500 inhabitants) would be sufficient. Before the formation of Greater Berlin in 1920, there were measures for emergency water and fire water supply in Deutsch-Wilmersdorf and especially in the city of Charlottenburg - as in other municipalities around Berlin. The source location is small for the sites and the wells at that time. According to printed matter 17/15418, there are 151 Landesbrunnen in the district, which, according to their actual purpose , are used for civil protection.

The list contains 182 "plumps" of various types and designs. One list entry relates to a Lauchhammer pump with a purely decorative function and four are related to recently closed locations. Of the (remaining) regular fountains, 96 are in the area of the former Charlottenburg district and 81 belonged to Wilmersdorf . The Lauchhammer fountains from the Lauchhammer iron foundry are among the historic well stands . The design came from Otto Stahn in 1890. Due to the fish head, 23 in the district can be classified as type I.

In the city of Charlottenburg, from 1890, the old boiler wells with pumps and groundwater intake close to the ground were initially replaced by pipe wells with the Kuntzian pumping principle. From 1900 fountain housings from Lauchhammer followed, which were similar to the Berlin fountain with water motifs (frog, fish, shells). As a sign of independence and civic pride, these fountains were marked with the Charlottenburg coat of arms (instead of the Berlin bear). There are still street fountains marked with the “city coat of arms”: with the floating tinned castle gate with raised black portcullis in the passage of the central building.

The community of Wilmersdorf (population in 1901: 22,400) adopted the Kuntze principle of the pipe well and commissioned its own housing in Lauchhammer. Around 1900, Wilmersdorf had fountain cladding made in Lauchhammer, the design of which was created by the Wilmersdorf sculptor and animal sculptor August Gaul . In the up-to-date Wilmersdorfer Blätter you can find the following: “In the last two months, two new street fountains [of the Lauchhammer type] have been installed. One of them is on Johann Georgstrasse near Kurfürstendamm, the other was in the churchyard on Berlinerstrasse. With reference to the pictorial reproduction shown here, it should be mentioned on this occasion that the figurative decoration of the local fountain housings, all of which are made according to the same model, comes from the hand of a Wilmersdorf citizen, the sculptor Professor Gaul, who is particularly famous for his animal sculptures Kurfürstendamm ( Halensee number 15 ) was replaced by a Type II of the (Berlin) Lauchhammer series after more than 100 years, there are no traces left at the churchyard. Such a Wilmersdorfer stand stood in 1954 at a location for the children's film Emil and the Detectives in Berlin.

Two fountains are of a special "Grunewald" type: with a grid pattern on the cylinders, the fountain column consists of three screwed parts with an octagonal foot for the cylinder of the stand part. The middle cylinder with an animal head as an exit has three similar patterns and the pattern is repeated again on the head part for the handle.

Apparently not originally created for the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district, there are two Pankow fountains with the “GP” coat of arms for “Pankow municipality”.

With 55 locations, the “Schliephacke” (Rümmler) fountains are still the most widespread model. After the Wall was built at the end of the 1960s, these were commissioned by the West Berlin administration, designed by Schliephacke and introduced by Building Director Rümmler . They were set up in the 1970s. The neoclassical Krause fountains commissioned by the Greater Berlin magistrate from the Krause company in Neusalz (Oder) in the mid-1920s are represented by 14 fountains in the cityscape. The variety of models is supplemented by 30 simple, one-piece tubular columns from the Wolf model and improved as Wolf 2. Later, the FSH wells with well stands were used, especially for larger drilling depths, which can be recognized by their shape as eleven three-part columns.

The well bodies called "Neue Krause" are thicker at the base of the well, which was (probably) due to the (existing) larger diameter at the base pipe. In this form there are two thick columns with the cranked lower and upper cylinder. There are still three of these, whose well stands have been firmly joined (welded). A fountain stand of this type consists of a wolf column placed on a frill piece. The "shapely" Borsig pillars with a hexagonal stand, which have been developed since the 2000s, are already 30 times at district emergency water points. These Borsig stands stand across Berlin and are provided with the respective district coats of arms from 2002. In mid-2018 there are already 30 such Borsig pillars in the district, which will be replaced in the event of repairs or necessary over-drilling. The well stands in Schliephacke design that were still in place in 2008 (after almost 50 years in operation) and probably no longer operational were replaced by newer well bodies at 34 drilling locations. They were preferably replaced with hexagonal borehole columns, in some cases with FSH well stands, which are recommended for deep swelling bores.

List description

The list can be sorted according to districts, corridor distance of the groundwater (in 2009) and pump shape. Property numbers that cannot be identified are marked in brackets and in some cases with a preceding "#" in the address. An asterisk (*) indicates a location between the listed house numbers / properties. In the description striking circumstances are compiled and further pictures can be viewed on Wikimedia Commons, broken down by district. The information is supplemented with web links on the location and on OpenStreetMap. The street fountains played an important role in earlier days. This may be borne out by a quote from the time of the Kapp Putsch : “Did you sleep well? Did you have water to make coffee this morning? If that was the case, you owe your bed rest and the nightly protection of the street fountain against sabotage to the selfless activity of the resident service. The resident defense is absolutely neutral and apolitical. Even a communist will not want to claim that guarding wells and intervening against sluggers and rabble has anything to do with political activity. (The leadership of the Westend Resident Defense, Charlottenburg, March 16, 1920.) "

A district office list was not available for the following WP list. The facts noted are based on the one hand on the information from the "OpenStreetMap project" collected since 2005; in spring and summer 2018, "inspections" were added and determined accordingly. A request from 2015 from the Pirate Party yielded the following information: 153 street wells (2015) are marked with the sign “No drinking water”, the figure for 2017 was 104. In the period 2010 to 2015, eleven street wells were shut down and six new ones built. There is a public interest in maintaining wells, as an application from 2011 shows.

According to the information provided by the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office in November 2019, there are a total of 227 wells in the district, compared to 225 in 2009. 101 locations are not immediately suitable for drinking water purposes because of chemical and 40 because of bacteriological contamination. For 2016, 106 functional wells were named by the district office in response to a written request from 2017. The list ( Template: future / in 5 yearsstatus 11/2019) contains 216 entries, seven of which relate to dismantled or stored street wells. With a target of 1500 inhabitants per well, the number of inhabitants (334,351) results in a requirement of 223 street wells .

The district office is responsible for the road wells, but the allocation differentiates between “state wells” as disaster control facilities and “federal wells” as civil protection facilities. The district office is responsible for financing the repairs and work on the "plumps". The responsible Senate administration is responsible for the cost of the state wells, another group is the emergency wells planned for civil protection, the federal government as owner bears the costs at the request of the state of Berlin. The requirement for the repair of the federal wells is conveyed by the Senate Department responsible for the environment. Changes can be detected with regular samples for water quality (health department) or with complex controls by well companies and the regulatory authority. If necessary, the timely condition at the respective location must be determined individually .

A current location determination results from the presentation of the results of the road inspection, which was commissioned by the Senate in 2014/2015 . The street furniture and pieces of equipment were then digitally evaluated and displayed on map material under the geoportal of the state survey office. The map material can be accessed via the link on the geoportal. The map details that are important for this article can be accessed using the search term “Straßenbefahrt 2014” and the relevant address. The locations of the road wells are marked with a blue square. Various map material can be selected as the background for the display. The overview of the locations of Berlin street fountains can be obtained via an OSM-supported map in a comparison of the WP-recorded and the plump recorded in 2014.

Abbreviations from the LOR lists of the statistics office are used for the districts of the district. The numbers on the pillars were assigned within the old districts before the district merger and are repeated for the larger district.

The drinking water wells installed since the 2010s complement the street wells at frequently visited places in the district. However, they are connected to the pipeline network and are sponsored by the Berliner Wasserbetriebe when they are set up, because the devices are pipe-bound, they are connected to a 3/8 inch drinking water pipe

In the picture from 2008, there is no longer a street fountain on this street corner. However, at the end of the 1990s, in the course of the traffic calming between Bundesallee and Prinzregentenstrasse, parking at an angle to the road and the sidewalk at the confluence with Bruchsaler Strasse were changed in Durlacher Strasse. According to the inspection, the road well was dismantled at this time and any traces of road construction removed. The residential buildings on the street corner were built in the 1960s (war ruins), the opposite (living at the Volkspark) in the early 1980s.
The location is owned by the State of Berlin .

  7. a b c The fountain column consists of three screwed tubes. The stand has an octagonal base with a cylindrical attachment. The pattern on the fountain stand is repeated a total of five times as a grid structure . The fountain stand is attached to the base tube with eight screws. The forme cylinder with the piston mechanism follows with three patterns. The water outlet is attached to the lower part of the sample with four screws. the tube is designed in the shape of an "eagle" -like head. Its beak is shaped as a hanging hook. The well head with the handle attachment is slightly thicker in diameter. Four screws connect to the middle part. The head is closed by a lid with a tooth pattern and an acorn symbol. The lever arm engages in an open slot on the other side in front of the pivot pin (covered with sheet metal on a well). The swing arm goes down from a flat steel into a round bar, which leads back as a curved handle. A heavy body in the form of two “half eggs” placed on top of each other hits a damping plate made of hard rubber at about the level of the outlet pipe. The inscription "Garvens" is poured onto the foot of the fountain stand. This inscription refers to the pump manufacturer Emil Garvens . On the head part (handle attachment) there is the cast sign "94 K", on the middle part with the outlet pipe corresponding to "94 RL".
