The Hardenberg Square is a square in Berlin . It is a sub-center in the Berlin City West and is located in the district of Charlottenburg ( Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district ). Hardenbergplatz borders in the north and east on the area of the zoological garden (district Tiergarten of the district center ) and in the south on Hardenbergstraße . To the west, the square is closed off by the Zoologischer Garten station building .
history
The place was built in 1958, than that between Hertzallee located and Hardenbergstraße part of Joachimsthalerstrasse in Hardenberg Square was renamed and converted into one. Like Hardenbergstrasse, it is named after the Prussian statesman Karl August von Hardenberg .
In the 1980s and especially before the 750th anniversary of Berlin in 1987, the square underwent a renovation. The subway exits on Hardenbergstrasse and the sales pavilion of Verkehrsbetriebe BVG on the central island were built over with buildings made of gray granite and the bus stops were completely redesigned in the style of a small bus station.
For decades , in the high-rise building on the corner of Budapester Strasse, there was Café Huthmacher, where the tradition of five o'clock tea was maintained, but which had to close due to bankruptcy .
The “ normal clock ” on the corner of Hardenbergstrasse has been and has been the meeting point for people to meet for over a century . Here, the advance editions of the Berlin Sunday newspapers were already being sold early on Saturday evening, which was important for those looking for apartments because of the apartment advertisements that appeared on Sundays at the time.
At Hardenbergplatz, the main character of the musical Line 1, who comes from the provinces, begins the adventure of the big city after leaving the train.
After the completion of the underground station on line 9 in 1961 and until the redesign in 1987, the Osram company, which was founded in Berlin, installed a 15-meter high floodlight, which was equipped with the latest, brightest lamps from its own production.
Up until the city's jubilee in 1987 at Bahnhof Zoo, a platform ticket for the price of one D-Mark had to be paid to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , which operated the so-called " interzonal trains ", to enter the platforms to accompany passengers .
The Berlin Zoo
The headquarters and the administration of the zoological garden are located in the building Hardenbergplatz 8 , next to it the lion gate of the zoo, which was rebuilt for the 750th anniversary of the city in 1987 according to old templates and redesigned in summer 2016 with a new cash desk area. Since then, the actual entrance has been on the other side of the gate and allows visitors without a ticket to take a look into the rhino enclosure.
traffic
- The square is one of the central points for public transport in the city. The most important BVG bus lines (such as the 100 and 200, which are popular with tourists), as well as night lines start, end and run at the six bays.
- The underground station Zoologischer Garten is located under the square . The lines U2 and U9 operate here .
- In the S-Bahn area of the above-ground long-distance and S-Bahn station currently (December 2017) the lines S3, S5, S7 and S9 operate.
- Since the opening of Berlin Central Station in 2006, only regional lines have stopped in the mainline area of the station .
- There is also a taxi rank and parking bays for private transport on the square .
Buildings in the area
On the side of the station facing away from Hardenbergplatz, in Jebensstraße, is the Museum of Photography with the Helmut Newton Collection.
In Hardenbergstrasse on the corner with Jebensstrasse, the Berlin-Brandenburg Higher Administrative Court has its seat in the building of the Federal Administrative Court previously located there ; it was originally built for the Prussian Higher Administrative Court. The IHK Berlin with its extension of the Ludwig Erhard House is located on the corner of Hardenbergstrasse and Fasanenstrasse .
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on Breitscheidplatz , the Bikini House , the Theater des Westens on Kantstrasse and the Europa Center are in the vicinity of the train station . The zoo window is adjacent to Joachimsthaler Strasse .
There were plans to build a ferris wheel north of the station. A building permit was issued in 2007, but the implementation has since been called into question. The project is now no longer operated.
