The list of fountains in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf is a detailed overview of the fountains in the public space of the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf . Wells that are out of order or no longer available are also included, but not simple hand pumps.

The list contains 51 objects and is based on the internet presentation of the district office of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (38 systems are listed here, status: end of 2016) and the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing via the public fountains in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (33 systems are listed here, status no : End of 2016), and on other sources.

For years there was a well fairy in the district , the innkeeper Isolde Josipovici, who was also committed to maintaining wells and putting them back into operation across Berlin. It is thanks to their commitment that the city's fountain was again given more attention by the districts, as can be seen from the example of Ernst-Reuter-Platz .

overview

In Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, 50 fountains enliven the public spaces and green spaces. According to the Senate, there are a total of 270 functioning ornamental fountains and sea fountains in Berlin, the maintenance of which will be taken over by Berliner Wasserbetriebe from 2017.

A round column standing in a concrete basin was encased by welded pipes that open up like flowers at about halfway up. Water escapes between the column and the pipe jacket, enveloping the visible part of the column with a transparent veil. Small, arched water fountains radiate from the edge of the pool towards the center of the pool. Fountain sculpture made of chrome-nickel steel in a flat, round stone basin by Brigitte and Martin Matschinsky-Denninghoff, since May 22, 1974 on Adenauerplatz.

The Weltkugelbrunnen is the largest fountain in the district and probably the most diverse and most interesting modern water system in Berlin. The center is a large, structured sphere with bubble and arch fountains and a “Noah's Ark” in a semicircular basin facing the Memorial Church. Towards the Europa-Center, a curved water staircase delimits the pool, while on the opposite side the water flows down via three-step cascades. The water feature, which is both lively and quietly splashing, is enriched by varied figure decorations. They depict the theme of paradise, figures of vanity, "Harry the Swiss", lovers or "little angry animals" in a humorous and contemplative way. In November 2013, the business owner and city development councilor Marc Schulte spoke out in favor of a redesign thinking about the entrance area to the Europa Center. In this context, a possible demolition of the well was also discussed.
Operating the fountain for five months a year costs the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district around 75,000 euros. Since the district is unable to bear these costs, the well is dependent on the help of sponsors. From 1996 to 2001, the City Working Group financed the fountain, and in 2004 the operator of the adjacent Europe Center donated 45,000 euros.

With the naming of the square, the district office was in the center of a fountain system install, which was already included in the architectural designs of Hermkes. Werner Düttmann carried out detailed planning. The facility has two rectangular concrete pools, the one to the west of the square is almost square with 19 m side length, the east is 30 m wide and 40 meters long.

More than 20 water fountains one to two meters high bubble in each basin. They come from rotating metal plates, so that the jets of water dance around each other. In the larger basin, the water from a group of fountains rises up to eight meters from five individual nozzles. In the early 1990s, the district office turned off the water from the wells. The pools were unclean, the parts of the pump system were ailing. The entire green area was no longer maintained - "no money in the till" was the succinct explanation. The owner of a guest house in Bleibtreustraße , the fountain fairy Isolde Josipovici, did not want to accept this situation and managed to contact Edzard Reuter . By threatening to withdraw the naming rights, Reuter reached the then Governing Mayor of Berlin, Eberhard Diepgen , that the then Charlottenburg district received the money to renovate the entire square including the fountain system. Berliner Wasserbetriebe also contributed to the renovation costs . The pension landlady also managed to get Wall AG to assume the operating costs of the fountains since then (status: 2014).

After the square next to the Deutsche Oper had a neglected appearance over the years, a competition for the redesign of the square was held in 2007, which the landscape architects Lützow 7 - garden and landscape architects C. Müller - J. Wehberg , who were able to win in the Capital u. a. designed the square in front of the Reichstag and the Republic Square. The redesign also called for the preservation of the three historic plane trees, which still come from the historic opera garden from 1914.

Two rectangles of different sizes were covered with sanded, anthracite-colored terrazzo asphalt, which cleverly takes on the color tones of the building. A light green “inlay” in the larger asphalt surface mediates the color between the facade and the green trees. The catering tables are on the smaller area; A water feature - illuminated in the evening - is integrated into the larger one. Up to 2 m high fountains alternate with a calm, 5 mm high water surface in which the lights of the facades are reflected, especially at night. The game runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and is electronically controlled; the water is fed through a pump system. The old concrete slabs were also read out and incorporated again: as a floor covering under the arcades of the building and as a narrow path that divides the two plateaus as well as the mastic asphalt surfaces.

The massive St. Georg Fountain or Bayernhof Bunnen was created by the architect Wilhelm Walther for the former amusement establishment "Bayernhof" on Potsdamer Platz near the Grand Hotel "Esplanade" . The architect, who also designed the castle-like Villa Walther and a large number of other Wilhelminian-style buildings, built the fountain in 1903/1904 in the courtyard of the establishment. When the building, which had been destroyed in World War II , was demolished in 1975, it was dismantled and reassembled in 1980 on Hindemithplatz, which was still unnamed at the time. The square was named after Paul Hindemith on October 19, 1995. A bronze plaque on the fountain contains the following inscription: ST. Fountain in Berlin-Charlottenburg, Viennese drinking fountain 3.jpg

The company Siemens Wien and the Wiener Wasserwerke dedicated the fountain to “The Thirsty of the City of Berlin”, as can be read on a brass plate embedded in the paved floor area. The Viennese drinking fountain by the water sculptor Hans Muhr is a prototype and novel in its subtle conception. It is an independent sculptural work in which the main emphasis was placed on the representation and formation of the element of water. The dignified, timeless drinking fountain was made from natural stone and bronze in small series. The unique character was created by the different design of the natural stone and the choice of stone type. The watermark, a “W”, stands as a “logo” for Viennese water and gives the drinking water system its uniqueness. The dogs' thirst was also thought of with the small drinking bowl at the foot of the fountain. The drinking fountain system is aesthetic as a sculpture even without water and does not have to be enclosed in winter like many conventional fountains. During "Wasser-Berlin 1993" an exchange of drinking fountains between the Berliner Wasserbetriebe and the Viennese waterworks was decided. The concept for the exchange was developed by the Wiener Wasserwerke and Siemens AG won as a sponsor. The Berlin drinking fountain was sent to Vienna in October 1993. The official inauguration should be on October 23, 1993, the 120th anniversary of the Vienna Waterworks. The chosen location in Vienna was the pedestrian zone of the Wiener-Wasser-Welt ". According to our information, the Berlin drinking fountain is still in Vienna today. The operator of this drinking fountain is Berliner Wasserbetriebe .

Charlottenburg Kurfürstendamm 61 Schwanenkükenbrunnen.jpg
The fountain was created in 1908 by August Gaul for the garden of Max Cassirer's villa , Kaiserallee 182/183 (today Bundesallee). In a slightly recessed octagonal basin, a slightly oval bowl was placed on a pedestal with an oval base. Two swan chicks and two pairs of swan chicks sit opposite each other in different poses on its edge. The water emerges from the nozzle in the center of the bowl in a bell shape and drains over the edge of the bowl into the basin. Cassirer had to sell his villa to the Imperial Japanese Navy Ministry in 1938 after the "Aryanization" of his company and stock holdings. The base of the fountain remained in the garden until after the Second World War, while the bronze group of animals was auctioned off in 1941. In 1962, the entire fountain was re-erected by the Charlottenburg District Office at the intersection of Kurfürstendamm and Leibnizstrasse.

Lehniner Platz opposite the Schaubühne on Kurfürstendamm was inaugurated on June 14, 2012. Where previously only cars were parked, a spacious and open area now forms the space as an urban stage.

The dominant element of the square is a water table which, as a seating element with an axial reference to the tower building of the Schaubühne, also includes a water feature. The well body consists of a total of 16 cast stone elements, which are put together to form an elongated cuboid. The inner area of the table is slightly offset and inclined by upstands on both sides.

Starting from the inlet fitting, a thin film of water is created that extends over the entire length of the well. The polished, dark surface of the fountain and the film of water act like a huge mirror of the surroundings. The theme of the calm, reflecting water surface increases to a moving water surface. The arched outline on the edge of the table at the end of the table and the six parabolic rays, which are switched independently of each other, form the highlight of the approximately 15-minute water feature.

Light strips on the two long sides of the water table and the light tiles embedded in the surface bring out the fountain particularly well at dusk.

Below a base, the water falls into a rounded basin underneath and flows over seven barrages to a catch basin. From here the water runs off into the lake. The cascade was put into operation in 1913, and Richard Kolkwitz from the Royal State Institute for Water Hygiene planned to use the cascade to discharge oxygen-rich drinking, ground and lake water into the Lietzensee. The aim was to combat algal blooms that had increasingly developed in the lake since the surrounding area was built on. This measure is regarded as one of the first water restorations in hydrology. Today the cascades are operated with lake water and the water is cleaned by sieves at the same time.

115 nozzles, from which 840 m³ of water per hour shoot up, have been integrated into a flat surface made of granite slabs.

All the resulting water images, such as that of a lily, a jellyfish or a claw, were designed with the eye. However, a computer system controls the amount of water, the water pressure or the direction of the nozzles, which create the water figures. A total of eight large pictures, alternating with small interludes, create a five-minute water choreography. Since the computer control even takes the street noise into account, the water splashes more quietly in the morning and evening than during the day. The water runs off again in a circumferential channel.

The striking centerpiece of the square is the circular fountain square, with five water fountains that are illuminated in the dark, pour over rough and polished granite steles and stone paving, and make everything appear in a new light. Stone blocks offer seating, whether at the edge of the fountain, in the sun or in the shade of the old trees. The square including the fountain was designed by the civil engineering department and bears the planning handwriting of the head of the landscape and civil engineering department, Christoph-Maria Maasberg, who died in 2011 under tragic circumstances.

The dolphin fountain was created in 1968 by Hans Bautz, cast in bronze and placed in a concrete basin on Hohenzollernplatz. In a basin - in the shape of a ring segment - there are three so-called white sparklers, which foam the water strongly, installed. The group sculpture, supported by a square base, shows three playing dolphins.

The fountain in a small green area directly in front of the Hohenzollern Church invites you to linger, thanks to its partially wooden surface on the edge of the pool and benches set up around it.

The Gänselieselbrunnen was created in 1910 by Cuno von Uechtritz and set up on Nikolsburger Platz. The bronze figures of Liesel and her geese stand on the natural stone setting of a romantic fountain. The system was lost in World War II and was reproduced by Harald Haacke in 1988. The replica was donated by the Berliner Industriebank AG. At the back of an artificial pond, boulders were piled up to form a plateau. Here is a roughly life-size girl in country clothes in the midst of three geese. In her right hand, which is stretched out slightly downwards, she is holding a stick from which water is dripping. Below the plateau, water flows through a channel from the rock wall into the pond. Lush flora frames the pretty grounds in summer.

In Rheingauviertel on the western forefront of the popular, always exemplary planted and manicured Rüdesheimer square is in front of a rounded wall an elongated, curved pool. Stairs to the upper level flank the facility on the left and right. In the middle a high rock was piled up on which the fountain figure is located. A bare Siegfried, a spear in his left hand, tames a rearing horse with his right. On the left side of the staircase there is a larger than life female nude figure symbolizing the Nahe and on the right a male figure representing the Rhine. On the mountain, the water runs down in rivulets, while on both sides of the wall, four lion heads each, stream water into the pool. The Rheingau Wine Fountain has been held here from May to September since 1967 .

Berlin Theodor-Heuss-Platz blue obelisk.jpg

Eight years after the competition decision, this radiant blue sculpture, conceived as a fountain, made up of seven glass blocks stacked on top of one another and tapering towards the top, became reality. It stands on a stainless steel-coated pedestal in a square basin. Using a pump, the water flows from above over the column, which is illuminated from the inside. The blue glasses designed by the artist were applied to the inside of a laminated safety glass supported by a steel construction. The history of Charlottenburg and Berlin is inscribed in thousands of handwritten lines on the glass blocks of the “Blue Obelisk”, interspersed with current text fragments. To avoid calcification too quickly, only condensed water was used for years. The well, which has since been shut down and is often the target of vandalism, was only put back into operation in 2002.

Fountain in Berlin-Wilmersdorf, Venetian fountain 1.jpg
This 18th century Venetian bowl fountain stood in the garden of the excursion restaurant Schloss Brüningslinden in Kladow from 1911 to 1972 . After the pub was demolished, the fountain was taken over by the Berliner Bank and donated to the Wilmersdorf district. After extensive restoration, the fountain system stood on a square pedestal from September 2nd, 1988 in the coat of arms of the Wilmersdorf town hall. In 2011 the fountain was dismantled because of the renovation of the Wilmersdorf town hall. The well was renovated and stored. In 2016, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf gave the fountain to the Spandau district on permanent loan, where it was set up in the courtyard of the club house on Kladower Dorfplatz.

The lower and at the same time largest of three fountain shells rests on a stable central column and four slender columns supported on the back of lions. The middle and small bowls rise above it, also standing on five pillars each. At the top of the fountain, the water exits through a pine cone and falls into the upper bowl. It runs over four gargoyles installed in the floor into the snake heads below and from there over the edge into the lower, richly ornamented bowl. Animal heads spouting water adorn the outer columns of the central fountain bowl.

Charlottenburg Kurfürstendamm 225 drinking fountain type 2

The municipal supplier, Berliner Wasserbetriebe , has developed two types of drinking fountains and installed them in public places, preferably in heavily frequented areas, throughout Berlin's urban area. At the end of 2016, a map showed 32 installation locations. The free and touchless refreshment directly from the water pipe is popular with strollers, shoppers and tourists. Even dogs can find refreshment in the drainage area. The wells installed on the streets and squares are only operated between May and October due to the risk of frost.

Type 1: The small one-meter-high pillars with a diameter of about 40 centimeters, cast from bronze , show five reliefs on top of each other on topics of the history of Berlin in their lower part . The designs come from the designer Siegfried Kaiser, the first models were created in 1985. The water bowl is shaped like a basket and covered with a grid. A small jet of water constantly rises from a brass ball on the side. Technical measures inside the column guarantee the best drinking water quality.

Type 2: The 105 centimeter high pillars, cast from aluminum , are visually subdivided into five equally high segments by cross markings and have a slightly oval cross-section, the design comes from the Berlin designer Marcus Botsch. On one side of the upper edge is a flat bowl with a diameter of 50 centimeters, from the center of which a fine jet of water also rises steadily. This type, also known as the Berlin drinking fountain, has no ornaments, but looks extremely elegant and is also suitable for installation in the interior of larger companies.
