The Karolingerplatz is a main square in the Berlin district of Westend ( Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf ). It is named after the ruling family of the Carolingians .
In the course of the development in Neu-Westend , a town square was designated in 1906, which was designed in 1912/1913 by the Charlottenburg garden director Erwin Barth . As in other parts of the city, the green spaces were created before the development was started in order to increase the residential value and the incentive to settle. When the square was ready, the pines of the Grunewald stood right next to it . The initially planned low, loosened up development has then become higher and more closed on the north side.
The square is divided into three separate areas:
- Rose garden ,
- the two adjacent grove and hedge quarters with two birch salons as resting places, Staudenweg and Taxusallee
- and the playground in the robinia grove on the south side.
Many elements are reminiscent of princely gardens from the Rococo period , which were very popular back then.
“Birch courtyards and playground are surrounded by wide rhododendron plantations, a solid, dark background for the rose garden. With apparently schematic floor plans, gardens of rich variety have been created, with rhythmic spatial, surface and light effects, with all kinds of seats, with tours and long perspectives. The streets bordering the square are closely planted with high hawthorn trunks . These are connected by rose hedges. "
The war and post-war period caused comparatively little damage to the square, so that the first restoration in 1949 largely corresponded to the pre-war state.
The square has retained its charm to this day. What was missing in the old furnishing elements (the benches by Heinrich Seeling , the town planner , the lamps by Franz Heinrich Schwechten ) were added in 1975–1987. Since 1982, the varieties "American Pillar" and "Dorothy Perkins" used by Barth have been on the renewed rose arches. The wooden gratings are made of iron for better durability.
Today the square is listed as a garden monument in the Berlin State Monument List.
