Mor Afrem Church

The Syrian Orthodox Mor-Afrem Church , the former Catholic, Alfons 1964-1966 Boklage built Grade II listed Church of the Assumption stands on the corner lot Minden Road 1 corner Mierendorffplatz in Berlin district of Charlottenburg the district Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf .

history

The Assumption Church was the youngest daughter of the mother parish Herz Jesu . Since 1950 it was an independent parish . Even before the church was built, the Maria Regina Martyrum parish was spun off in 1963 as a subsidiary of the Assumption of Mary .

Originally, the Gustav-Adolf-Kirche should have been built at today's Mierendorffplatz at the beginning of the 1920s , but it was finally established in the neighborhood. August Kaufhold planned a traditional basilica for the Catholic faithful, but for financial reasons only a temporary arrangement with a small chapel and apartment for the clergyman on the upper floor could be built in 1926 , which remained until 1964. Then it was demolished in favor of a large new church building. During the construction period, the Catholic community enjoyed hospitality in the Gustav-Adolf-Kirche, which resulted in many ecumenical contacts.

Since 1988, the Assumption of Mary has also been the place of worship for the Italian Catholic Mission (Missione Cattolica Italiana). In 2005 the Catholic Church sold the church to the Syrian Orthodox community Mor Afrem e. V., the Mor Afrem Church was officially opened on May 4th, 2008.
