Heinz Spilker (born November 25, 1927 in Elverdissen near Herford ) is a German sculptor of classical modernism . One focus of his work is the realistic design of portraits and sculptures for public spaces. In the tradition of the animalier of France , he created a cycle of animal sculptures in Berlin . Among other things, he was a master student of the sculptor Renée Sintenis at the Berlin University of Fine Arts .

Live and act

Heinz Spilker was born as the eldest of three brothers in a farming family. After school he began an apprenticeship as a carpenter , which he completed in 1944 with the journeyman's examination. After the end of the war in 1945 he worked in the profession he had learned. The turning point in his life came in 1950 on his first major cultural trip to Rome and Florence with the decision to become a sculptor.

In 1951 he began studying at the master school for handicrafts in Bielefeld in the sculpting class of Arnold Rickert. There he received, according to his own statements, "an excellent technical and artistic training". In 1953, after four semesters, Spilker moved to the "Hochschule für Bildende Künste" in Berlin-Charlottenburg. There he became a master student of Renée Sintenis in the first semester, where he began to deal with the representation of animals in art.

As a gifted scholarship holder, he continued studying with Paul Dierkes until 1958. Finally, he supplemented his knowledge with practical training in a stonemasonry . The painter and sculptor Wilhelm Tank was one of his teachers .
