In the Middle Ages, the fountains in Herford were used to supply drinking water via the market fountains; today they beautify the squares and sometimes serve as a water feature. The fountains tell the history of the city and are sometimes stone witnesses. Ten historical and modern fountains characterize Herford city ​​center today .

The Hanseatic Fountain

The modern Hansebrunnen , which was erected in 1990 and is in the shape of a cog and reminds of Herford's membership in the medieval Hanseatic League , stood in Lübberstraße, facing Berliner Straße . The base and the trough of the Hansebrunnen are made of grained brown-black granite , the top of bronze . The circulation shows merchants who swore the Hanseatic oath, market activity, a train of Westphalian Hansen and the skyline of Herford. The fountain is reminiscent of the new Westphalian Hanseatic League which was founded in Herford in 1983. The fountain was created by the sculptor Heinz Spilker . The Herford homeland association financed it through donations. The fountain was dismantled as part of the redesign of the pedestrian zone in Lübberstrasse. A new location has not yet been found.

The Neustädter Brunnen

The Neustädter Brunnen , a renaissance fountain from 1599, is located on the Neuer Markt. On top of the fountain housing is a banner bearer with the banner in his right hand and the shield of the free imperial city of Herford in his left hand. This fountain was sold by the city of Herford around 1830 out of financial difficulties. The buyer, Lieutenant General von Vincke , placed it on his Ostwalde estate near Melle . In 1962, according to another source in 1964, the fountain was repurchased and re-erected at its old location on Neuer Markt. In September 2019, it was named Monument of the Month in Westphalia-Lippe by the LWL Monument Preservation, Landscape and Building Culture in Westphalia .

The century fountain in Gehrenberg , set up in 1997, is reminiscent of Herford originals with its moving figures. You can see “Mother Green”, who sold haberdashery as a “flying trader” with her little cart , “Trompeten Oskar”, who liked to play a song on his trumpet for a beer, and children in a carousel rocket. The latter stand for the showmen who are based in Herford. By the way, "Mother Green" and "Trompeten-Oskar" were married to each other. This fountain was created by the sculptor Bonifatius Stirnberg . The century fountain is a gift from the "daughter" Stadtwerke / Wasserwerke to the city of Herford.

This fountain is popularly known as the Citizen Shower and can be found in the pedestrian zone Gehrenberg - Am Gange. In 1984 the modern fountain made of Belgian granite was installed. It is a masterpiece by the stonemason Ulrich Galling .

The old town fountain

The old town fountain from 1616 with its striking filigree wrought iron crown stands on the square in front of the cathedral . The old Herford coat of arms can already be found on the fountain. The draw well was formerly on the old market and was sold to Lieutenant General von Vincke around 1830 when the city was in financial difficulties. He had it set up on his Ostwalde estate near Melle. The fountain was rediscovered around 1965 and bought back for the city by a foundation in 1967.

A canon lady with the abbey coat of arms rides a dolphin . The dolphin, as a symbol of Christian teaching, was considered an advocate of the people and was a symbol of the resurrection. The canons were responsible for the memoria, the commemoration of prayer. The abbey fountain was created in 1917 by Alfred Glaser .

During archaeological excavations between 1988 and 1990, the 5.60 meter deep old abbey well was discovered. The old abbey fountain stands quite inconspicuously in front of the town hall, in memory of the abbey and its former location in the abbey. Two gold coins were found in the deposits on the bottom of the well, one of which is dated 1577, the second around 1600. They indicate that the fountain was used in the first half of the 17th century.

The rascal

A bronze figure has been standing in Bäckerstraße since 1986, depicting a cheeky, cheeky and yet innocent looking rascal . This fountain was created by the Herford sculptor Marianne Bleeke-Ehret , whose son Ralf-Henrik Bleeke was the model for the sculpture. It is a foundation by H.-D. Sheep.

Recurring geese ” is the name of the fountain in Radewig on the Gänsemarkt. In 1978 the shell limestone base was worked on on site at its stand. Eight geese cast from bronze adorn this fountain. It weighs around a ton and is 3.20 meters high. On June 13, 1990, twelve years after the inauguration of the goose fountain, the two geese on top were missing their heads and had to be replaced. The goose fountain was created by the sculptor Bruno Buschmann from Oerlinghausen. To finance the fountain, the Radewig eV community started a fundraising campaign.

The Wittekind fountain

The only oversized Wittekind monument in Germany on Wilhelmsplatz is a reminder of the Saxon Duke Wittekind (Widukind). The fountain describes the miracle of the spring through which the half-dying Wittekind became a Christian and submitted to his superior enemy, the Frankish king Charlemagne. The original monument was created in 1899 by the sculptor Heinrich Wefing . It was melted down for armament purposes in 1942, but the base was retained. In 1959, the Wittekind monument was recreated from old pictures by the sculptor Walter Kruse .
