Ostwalde Estate (Lower Saxony)
Ostwalde estate

Ostwalde was a knight's seat north of Melle in Lower Saxony .

Presumably it originally served as a bulwark to protect an old people's castle that was then on the mountain . Ostenwalde is the ancestral seat of the noble family of the Lords and Barons of Vincke , who have served as ministerials for the Osnabrück bishop since 1223 and still own the estate today. In 1343 the house is mentioned as the seat of Omer Vincke.

The two-storey west wing is today's main building. This part of the building is also the oldest and dates from 1698. The gable is adorned with pyramids, which are common for the Weser Renaissance. The middle section was completed in 1780. The east wing was restored between 1906 and 1908. The tower in the bend was also added during this construction project and is probably to be seen as an allusion to the Weser Renaissance. In the manor there is a private library with over 15,000 books, which was created by Idel Jobst II von Vincke.

In the park behind the manor there is an orangery from the 19th century and, since 1839, a Gothic fountain house that used to stand on Herford's market square. Nearby on the Oldendorfer Mühlenbach there is also an oil mill belonging to the estate, which is powered by water and dates from the 15th century. In 1988 the mill was completely restored. Nowadays it is still operated on mill days.

The von Vincke family was always represented in the state parliament. The mansion was occupied from 1945-46 by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery , who was at the head of the British military government in Germany . The mansion was once owned by wide moats surrounded.

One day after the Basic Law was passed , the British Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin met Konrad Adenauer , Kurt Schumacher and Karl Arnold on May 9th at Gut Ostenwalde . 1949.
