The Breslauer Platz is located in Berlin's district of Friedenau and is part of the Berlin administrative district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg . The triangular square covers an area of around 1300 square meters.

history

The place was initially unofficially called simply Schulplatz or Marktplatz . From 1875 to 1964 it was named Lauterplatz after the Lauter , a left tributary of the Rhine . This name referred - like that of several other streets in the area - to the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine , as also Friedenau itself was named after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871.

The laying of the foundation stone for the town hall of the former independent community of Friedenau, designed by Hans Altmann in the late historical style , was laid on October 13, 1913. The building was completed in 1916, the year of the war .

The square was renamed on October 1, 1964 to Breslau , the capital of Silesia . It was justified by the fact that the East Berlin magistrate had renamed the local Breslauer Straße in March 1964 and that the Schöneberg district - to which Friedenau belonged at the time - was the sponsor district of Silesia. The cabaret artist Wolfgang Neuss drew on this renaming in his program The latest rumor and asked: "Who was this Doctor Breslauer?" Sigismund Lauter (1891–1954). Lauter was an opponent of the Nazi regime.

In 2012 there were plans by the district office to restore the square to its original state. For this purpose, the Lauterstraße on the short section between Niedstraße and Rheinstraße should be closed to through traffic and the Niedstraße in front of the Friedenau town hall should be opened for both directions. Construction work should start in mid-2013. A small meadow with a tree and three benches was planned. As soon as the plans became known, a citizens' initiative was spontaneously set up to achieve more greenery and more quality of stay for this place: a small forest with at least seven trees was to be created, an ornamental fountain set up and path lighting installed. It was also proposed to convert the kiosk on Rheinstrasse, currently a BVG waiting hall, into a “culture stop”. And the toilet in the basement, which has been closed for years, should be expanded as a small cultural space for neighborhood get-togethers, small festivities or readings. The costs of this project would have been well above the originally estimated 700,000  euros . The fountain is to be financed from the Berlin Senate Administration's “Places Funding Program”, but without operating costs. So that the historical market can continue to take place, the floor will be covered with granite slabs, a central water connection will be set up and the power supply will be improved. The district office and the citizens' initiative have summarized all concerns in a new plan, and construction will be stopped until it is passed in 2014. In addition, a donation account was set up. The renovation began in 2015 and was completed in January 2016. As planned, several benches were set up and waste baskets were installed near them. The largest part of the square was given a checkerboard paving. But despite the parking ban now in force and despite frequent checks by the public order office, there are always cars here on non-market days. In order to prevent “game parking”, bollards should then be erected with the full inclusion of Lauterstraße in the square .

Buildings and use

Directly on the square is a kiosk that was built in 1929 according to a design by the architect Heinrich Lassen as a public lavatory with an attached bus shelter and is a listed building.

A weekly market has been held on three days (Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday) since 1870 on the triangular square . This makes it one of the oldest weekly markets in Berlin that is operated without interruption. In the run-up to Christmas, the Friedenauer Engelmarkt is also organized on Breslauer Platz.
