Gareth Coppack (born April 10, 1980 ) is a Welsh snooker player from Rhyl in north Wales. In the 2007/08 season he played for a year on the professional tour .

Career

Gareth Coppack started playing snooker when he was 9 years old. He won junior titles in Wales and Great Britain and was a member of Welsh national teams. At the age of 17, he took part in the first edition of the European Junior Championship for under-19s and reached the semi-finals after defeating Andrew Norman . The following year he took part in the UK Tour , which was played for qualification for the professional tour, but he only played one game in the first tournament. He also took part in professional tournaments open to amateurs year after year, but with little success. In the 2001/02 season he played three tournaments on the Challenge Tour and came in one of them, including a win over Stefan Mazrocis to the bottom 32. The following year, however, he lost all but one of his opening games. In 2003/04 he came back in a tournament among the bottom 32 and in qualifying for the professional world championship up to round 4. 2004 was then for the first time a round of 16. However, all attempts did not bring him close to professional status. He gave up this path and in 2005 took a one-year break from snooker.

He then made a successful return to Welsh amateur snooker and in 2007 made it straight to the top of the national rankings. The Welsh number 1 also got a wildcard from the national association for the Main Tour and so Coppack turned professional at the age of 27. He started the 2007/08 season successfully with a 5-3 win over the Scot James McBain at the Shanghai Masters . But with only 2 wins out of 7 games, he was eliminated in the group stage of the Grand Prix . And in the following four tournaments he lost his opening match. After a narrow 8: 9 defeat by David Morris at the UK Championship at the Welsh Open , he had to face the Irish again and lost significantly.

He also played the Pontins-Pro-Am-Tour (6 tournaments for professionals and amateurs). He defeated players like Mark King and Mark Joyce and made it to the quarterfinals twice. He qualified for the Grand Final, where he reached the round of 32. The series was not rated for the world rankings . He then achieved his best ranking result at the World Cup . He first defeated Kurt Maflin 10: 9 and 12 points ahead in the decision-making frame and then won against his compatriot Paul Davies with 10: 8. But then he clearly lost in the round of 64 against ex-world champion John Parrott . However, it was the last tournament of the season and in the ranking list he only made it to 83rd place out of 96 players. After a year he lost his professional status and made no further attempt to return to the main tour.

After his sports career, Coppack established himself as a self-employed gas and heating installer in his hometown of Rhyl.
