Yan Bingtao ( Chinese  颜 丙 涛 , Pinyin Yán Bǐng Tāo ; born February 16, 2000 ) is a Chinese snooker player . The amateur world champion from 2014 has been playing as a professional on the Snooker Main Tour since 2016 . In the 2017/18 season he became the youngest finalist of a world ranking tournament at the Northern Ireland Open . At the beginning of the 2019/20 season , he won his first world ranking tournament, the Riga Masters .

Career

2013–2016: Beginnings as an amateur

In June 2013, Yan Bingtao took part in a PTC tournament, the Yixing Open , for the first time. Three months later he reached the second round of the Zhangjiagang Open, where he lost 4: 3 to his compatriot Lu Chenwei . In March 2014, he took part in the China Open as a wildcard player, but was eliminated in the wildcard round against John Astley . In June 2014 he reached the round of 16 of the Yixing Open and qualified a few days later at the Wuxi Classic for the first time for the finals of a world rankings tournament. There he managed to move into the round of 32, in which he lost 4-5 to Englishman Barry Hawkins . At the Shanghai Masters 2014 he also reached the round of 32. In his two other participations in ranking tournaments in the 2014/15 season ( International Championship 2014 and China Open 2015 ), however, he was eliminated in the wildcard round. In November 2014 he won the amateur world championship with an 8: 7 victory in the final against the Pakistani Muhammad Sajjad as the youngest player to date and thus secured a professional spot for the Main Tour seasons 2015/16 and 2016/17 . Since he did not receive a visa for the United Kingdom , his Main Tour ticket was postponed by one year and is therefore valid for the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons .

In June 2015, he and Zhou Yuelong won the World Cup as Team China B with a 4-1 final victory over the Scots John Higgins and Stephen Maguire . Both players qualified for the Champion of Champions tournament in November and reached the group finals. In his opening match, Yan defeated the then world number four , Shaun Murphy , with 4: 2, before he was defeated by the eventual tournament winner, Neil Robertson , with 3: 6. In August 2015, Yan moved into the final of the 6-Red World Championship of the IBSF and lost it 2: 6 against the Indian Pankaj Advani . A month later he reached the round of 16 at the 6-Red World Championship , an invitation tournament as part of the Main Tour 2015/16, in which he was eliminated from the eventual finalist Liang Wenbo . At the Haining Open 2015 , the only PTC 2015/16 tournament in Asia , he was eliminated in the round of 128.

2016/17: First professional season

In his first season as a professional, Yan Bingtao started with defeats in the qualifying tournaments for the Indian Open 2016 and the World Open 2016 . At the Riga Masters 2016 he made it into the main round and then moved into the round of 16 of a world rankings tournament for the first time with wins against Fraser Patrick and Martin Gould , in which he had to admit defeat to Anthony McGill 4-0. At the Paul Hunter Classic 2016 in Fürth he also reached the round of 16 and lost to Dominic Dale 1: 4. The third round of 16 followed just a little later at the English Open , after defeating world number eight, Mark Allen . At the Northern Ireland Open 2016 he failed again in the round of 16, this time to Anthony Hamilton . In February 2017 he reached the quarter-finals at the German Masters after victories against Dominic Dale and Michael Holt for the first time in a ranking tournament, which he lost after a 2-2 draw in the meantime with 2: 5 against the Englishman Stuart Bingham . A little later he made it to the round of 16 at the Welsh Open , after winning against reigning world champion Mark Selby , among others . In qualifying for the 2017 World Cup , he defeated Sam Craigie , Mark Davis and Alexander Ursenbacher . At 17 years and 58 days he was the second youngest player to qualify for the finals in Sheffield after Luca Brecel (2012) . In the Crucible Theater , however, he lost his first round match with 8:10 against Shaun Murphy. By reaching the World Cup finals, he was able to improve again in the world rankings, so that he finished 56th at the end of the season. As the best-placed tour newcomer, he was named Rookie of the Year .

2017/18: First Main Tour final

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season , Yan was eliminated from qualifying at the Riga Masters . A little later he formed one of the two Chinese teams together with Zhou Yuelong at the World Cup, which was held again after a year break . However, the defending champions had to admit defeat to England's Judd Trump and Barry Hawkins in the semifinals (3: 4). At the CVB International Challenge , he was part of the Chinese team that lost the duel against the British team 9:26. In doubles with Zhou Yuelong, Yan Bingtao achieved the only match win for China. At the China Championship 2017 he reached the round of 32 for the first time this season in a ranking tournament. In September 2017 he won the gold medal in the Six-Red at the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games with a 5-1 final win over Soheil Vahedi -Snooker and the bronze medal in the team. At the English Open 2017 he reached the last sixteen and was only narrowly defeated by the Scot Anthony McGill (3: 4). A little later he defeated in the International Championship , among others, Ronnie O'Sullivan (6: 1), Ricky Walden (6: 4) and the world ranking third John Higgins (6: 2) and moved for the first time in a ranking tournament semi-finals, in to whom he had to admit defeat to Mark Allen 2: 9.

After he was knocked out against Allen again at the Shanghai Masters , this time in the last 64, he succeeded for the first time at the Northern Ireland Open in November with wins against defending champions Mark King , Ryan Day , Robert Milkins and Lü Haotian for the first time the entry into the final. At 17 years, 9 months and 10 days, Yan became the youngest Main Tour finalist to date. In the final against Mark Williams he won the first two frames and took the lead 6: 3, but then had to accept the 6: 6 equalization. Yan was never behind until the 17th frame, but the Welshman prevailed in the decider. If Yan had won, he would have become the youngest ever world ranking tournament winner. Ronnie O'Sullivan's record from 1993 remained unbroken. By making it to the finals, he climbed to number 27 in the world rankings, making it into the top 32 for the first time.

Then came Yan in the UK Championship and the 2017 Scottish Open in the Round of and difference in qualifying for the German Masters in 2018 against Matthew Selt out. He also suffered a first round defeat at the 2018 snooker shoot-out , this time against Graeme Dott . At the World Grand Prix 2018 he reached the round of 16 for the fourth time this season and only narrowly lost to Ronnie O'Sullivan (3: 4). In March 2018, he moved into the quarterfinals of the Welsh Open , where he lost to Barry Hawkins 5-1. As one of the best 16 players in the one-year ranking, he was eligible to compete in the Players Championship a little later , but lost his opening game against Mark Williams. At the China Open 2018 he was eliminated in the round of 32 against Mark Allen. In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , he failed in the second round after a 6-1 lead just 9:10 to Tian Pengfei . He finished his second professional season on the 23rd place in the world ranking and thus clearly secured himself to remain on the Main Tour.

2018/19: Third professional playing time

At the beginning of his third professional season , Yan Bingtao reached the round of 32 at the World Open . In the Shanghai Masters , which is now organized as an invitation tournament, he received a starting place as one of the five best Chinese professionals, but had to face the Scottish Anthony McGill in the first round give up. A few days later he reached the second round of the China Championship , which he lost 5-1 to Judd Trump . In the world rankings, he improved to 21st place, which was his best placement to date. After early defeats at the European Masters and the English Open , he reached his second round of 16 this season at the International Championship by beating Jimmy White and Ryan Day . There he was again defeated by the Englishman Judd Trump, this time with 1: 6. A little later at the Northern Ireland Open there was an opening defeat against his compatriot Zhang Anda . In the UK Championship 2018 , Yan won his first round match against the German Lukas Kleckers and finally reached the round of 32, in which he lost to Kyren Wilson . At the last tournament of the year, the Scottish Open 2018 , he made it to the round of 32, which he clearly lost to John Higgins .

He started the second half of the season at the German Masters 2019 with a win against Matthew Stevens (5: 3), which made him into the round of 16 for the third time this season. As in the first two round of 16 games, he met Judd Trump again, to whom he now had to admit defeat 1: 5. As one of the 32 best players of the season so far, Yan was invited to the 2019 World Grand Prix , in which, however, he lost his opening game against David Gilbert (0: 4). He then suffered first-round defeats at the Welsh Open (2: 4 against Alexander Ursenbacher ) and at the snooker shoot-out . At the Indian Open 2019 he lost to his compatriot Lu Ning (0: 4) in the round of 32 . At the Gibraltar Open 2019 he reached his fourth and final round of 16 of the season. There he met his compatriot Tian Pengfei , to whom he had to admit defeat 3: 4. At the China Open he lost 6-2 to Peter Ebdon in the round of 64 . Despite the early elimination, Yan improved to 20th place in the world rankings. In qualifying for the World Cup , Yan Bingtao prevailed against Lukas Kleckers (10: 3) and Mei Xiwen (10: 8) before failing to Michael Georgiou (8:10) in the decisive third qualifying round .

2019/20: First Main Tour title

At the first tournament of the 2019/20 season , the Riga Masters , Yan Bingtao reached the final with a victory over his compatriot Li Hang and won his first ranking tournament with a 5-2 victory over the Englishman Mark Joyce .
