John J. Astley (born January 13, 1989 ) is an English snooker player from Gateshead .

Career

In 2005, John Astley tried for the first time to qualify for the Snooker Main Tour via the PIOS tournaments. Although he tried it every year from 2007 onwards at PIOS and Q-School tournaments, he always failed to meet the qualification standard. It was only through the Players Tour Championship 2012/13 that he succeeded in entering the professional field. He always survived the opening match with 10 participations and reached round 3 three times. By constantly collecting points, he made it to 5th place in the amateur ranking.

The snooker season 2013/14 started John Astley with a win against Mike Dunn in qualifying for the 2013 Wuxi Classic . This was the first time he was in the main round of a world ranking tournament among the last 64. He was able to repeat the result at the UK Championship and the China Open . At the smaller PTC tournaments, he was twice in the last 32. At the end of the season he was among the top 100. He received the Rookie of the Year Award for best tour newcomer. However, since he was unable to confirm these results the following year and only won four games in total, it was not enough to qualify for the main tour.

Astley took a year off and worked as a snooker trainer. He also got a role as a snooker player in a play that was performed at the Crucible Theater , the site of the World Snooker Championship . In 27 appearances in front of a theater audience he achieved 12 century breaks from a prepared image and was seven times "world champion" in his role.

Before the 2016/17 season he tried again to get a tour ticket through the Q School. At the second tournament he defeated Peter Lines, who had just dropped out of the Main Tour, in his group final and secured himself two more professional years. His second attempt started very successfully, at the beginning of the Riga Masters he reached the quarter-finals. When Indian Open the knockout participation followed.
