Tournament course

Round 1

In the opening round three top 20 players stumbled. The Hong Kong Marco Fu failed to amateur players Sam Craigie 3: 5th Stephen Maguire and Michael White lost 4-5 in the decider. The Englishman Mark Davis even playful a 4: 0 lead against compatriot Tom Ford . On the other hand, Barry Hawkins , Graeme Dott and last year's world champion Stuart Bingham kept their nerves , who moved 5: 4 into round 2.

round 2

In the second main round, four out of five local heroes were hit, including home favorites Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo . Only Zhang Anda reached the round of 16 with a surprising 5-2 against Judd Trump . The reigning world champion Mark Selby had to admit defeat 3: 5 to the Thai Thepchaiya Un-Nooh . For Hawkins and Bingham, round 2 was also the end of the line. Young talent Kyren Wilson received a whitewash against Daniel Wells . Mark Williams and John Higgins trembled 5: 4 over Graeme Dott and the formally strong Michael Holt into the second round.

Round of 16

In the first session, the two Scots John Higgins and Anthony McGill won 5-2. Higgins was initially 2-0 down against Mark Williams , but then convinced with a strong match game and scored the highest break of the tournament with a 144. McGill built on his success at the Indian Open and delighted with high breaks of 66, 81, 61 and 115 points. Thepchaiya Un-Nooh dismantled Alan McManus with 5-0 and two century breaks. The game between Allister Carter and Daniel Wells was curious when the table had to be changed when the score was 2-0. Carter finally prevailed in the decider with 5: 4 against the Welshman .

In the second round, defending champion Shaun Murphy and Riga Masters winner Neil Robertson won confidently 5: 1 with high breaks and secure match play. David Gilbert's 5-0 win over the hopeless Zhang Anda was even clearer . The full distance was between Joe Perry and Ben Woollaston , where Perry was the last player to secure a quarter-final ticket.

Quarter finals

In the first quarter-finals, John Higgins came under the wheels 5-0 against Allister Carter . The Scot could not build on his performance in the round of 16 and made a number of hole errors, which Carter immediately punished. Pointing the way was the fourth frame, which Higgins lost after a respotted black and went into the break with a 4-0 deficit.

Anthony McGill showed strong break building again with 80, 60 and 62 points, but was still clearly defeated by Thepchaiya Un-Nooh with 2: 5. The Thai, who had already played brilliantly against Selby and McManus, secured his semi-final ticket with outstanding match play and breaks of 73, 60 and 125 points.

Shaun Murphy initially built on his strong performances and took the lead with 2-0 against Joe Perry . After Perry frame 3 with a break of 54, the defending champion missed Black at 57:57 and missed the chance to lead the break. Perry won all subsequent frames and celebrated his first win over Murphy 5-2.

In the last quarter-finals, Neil Robertson and David Gilbert, the two most attacking players of the tournament up to then, met each other. The game began all the more confused with several hole defects on both sides. Robertson took a 2-0 lead before Gilbert Frame 3 won with a respotted black and then drew 2-2. After the break, Gilbert couldn't use his chances and the Australian secured a place in the semi-finals with a 5-2 win.

Semifinals

In the first semifinals, Allister Carter met Thepchaiya Un-Nooh . The last form strong Thai could not build on his performances, but Carter did not manage to get into higher breaks either. Thepchaiya played a lot of balls worth seeing, but missed numerous chances to continue and Carter finally won 6-1. For the first time since the German Masters 2013 , the Englishman made it back to the finals of a ranking tournament.

In the second semifinals, a great Joe Perry friend and training partner Neil Robertson rolled 6-2. A break of over 60 points was played in all eight frames. Perry opened the scoring with a 70 and a 63 and took a 2-0 lead. Robertson countered with a 78 and 76 to equalize. After the break, Perry turned up and played three Centuries in a row. The Australian was no longer in the game and Perry secured a place in the final with a 91 clearance.

final

The first final session started in disarray with many mistakes on both sides. Allister Carter initially took the lead 1-0, Joe Perry immediately turned the game 2-1, but missed his strong semi-final form. It stayed even for the next two frames and Perry took the lead back with a break of 78.

This was followed by the strongest phase of Carter, who won seven frames in a row and pulled away 8-3. Perry managed to shorten it from 131 and 106 points to 8: 9 with two Centuries, but the gap was too big and Carter secured his first ranking tournament victory since the German Masters 2013 with a 127 .
