The Betway UK Championship 2016 was a world ranking tournament as part of the Snooker Main Tour of the 2016/17 season , which took place from November 22nd to December 4th, 2016 in the Barbican Center in York , Northern England .

The defending champion was Australian Neil Robertson , who was eliminated in round 1.

World champion and world number one Mark Selby won the tournament for the second time in his career. He defeated five-time UK Champion Ronnie O'Sullivan in the final 10-7. For Selby it was already the third tournament victory this season, O'Sullivan, however, had lost in three finals against three different opponents this season.

Tournament schedule

First round to round of 16

The biggest surprise of the first round was the elimination of last year's winner Neil Robertson against amateur Peter Lines . He was the only one of the three Q-School qualifiers to survive the first round. Lines, who had only dropped out of the top 64 in the world after many professional years the previous season, then also reached round 3. His son Oliver Lines caused another big surprise when he defeated world number three Judd Trump in round 2 . Stuart Bingham , placed one position higher in the ranking, was the second prominent victim of the second round. He lost to the Chinese Yu Delu . With Barry Hawkins , another top 16 player was eliminated despite a good performance. His opponent Fergal O'Brien showed an exceptional performance and played 5 Century Breaks in the 6-5 win. This was a record in a best-of-11 match. He didn't get the very high breaks in the game against Stephen Maguire , after all, he was able to force a decision frame again, but this time he lost. Mark Allen only managed one special break in round 2 , but it was the highest possible: His maximum was the first in his career.

The positive surprise of the third round was the Welshman Jamie Jones . He had already played very confidently and then clearly defeated Ding Junhui 6-2. Then he won with the same result in the round of 16. Oliver Lines won his third round match surprisingly clearly: In the 6-0 he gave Jimmy Robertson no chance. Then he had no chance against Marco Fu either. Clear conditions also caused Ronnie O'Sullivan , who gave his first frame until Round 3 and also with Matthew Stevens , who previously after all, Joe Perry had beaten in the second round had no problem.

Quarter-finals to finals

In the round of 16, the remaining favorites had almost always prevailed, only Luca Brecel and Jamie Jones had defeated higher placed players. For both of them, however, came the end in the quarterfinals, with the Welshman defending himself against Marco Fu into the decision-making frame. In the 11th frame, the decision was made in the top game of the quarter-finals: John Higgins, previously two-time tournament winner, just lost to world champion Mark Selby. Ronnie O'Sullivan had an easier time in his 6-2 win, even if the opponent was Mark Williams.

In the semi-finals the signs were reversed. Again Selby had the nominally strongest opponent with Shaun Murphy, but this time he won convincingly 6: 2. O'Sullivan got into trouble for the first time in the tournament against Marco Fu. Despite better starts, he fell 4-5 against the Chinese and only won a hard-fought tenth frame after Fu had missed several chances. But then he secured the decision frame with a convincing century break.

final

Although O'Sullivan started the final as he had finished the semifinals - with a century break - it was Mark Selby who dominated the first session. He turned a 1: 2 into a 6: 2 at the break of the session. In the evening session, O'Sullivan was able to fight his way back to 5: 7 and 7: 8, but Selby withstood the pressure and was able to achieve a 10: 7 victory with two final century breaks. For Selby it was the second victory in his second UK Championship final, O'Sullivan suffered his first defeat in his sixth final.

Century breaks

For the fifth time in a row a maximum break was achieved at the UK Championship , for Northern Irishman Mark Allen it was the first of his career. With 105 Centurys, the previous year's record was once again exceeded by one, the two finalists Mark Selby and Ronnie O'Sullivan were the most successful players with 10 breaks of 100 points or more each, 3 of which both scored in the final. Fergal O'Brien achieved his 5 Centurys all in one match, setting a record for a match on 6 frames of win.
