Barracouta rock

The Barracouta Rock is a sea-washed reef rock off the western end of South Georgia . It is located 650 m south of the entrance to Jordan Cove on the coast of Bird Island .

The rock was first mapped in 1961 by the crew of HMS Owen . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1964 after one of the motorized dinghies of the HMS Owen used for land surveying , which in turn was named after the English name barracouta for the Snoek ( Thyrsites atun , also known as herring mackerel ).
