Scott Donaldson (born March 19, 1994 in Perth ) is a Scottish snooker player who has been a professional player on the Snooker Main Tour since 2012 . In 2020 he won his first professional tournament with the Championship League .
Career
Between 2010 and 2012, Donaldson won several national junior titles. In 2011 he reached the round of 16 and in 2012 the quarter-finals of the Scottish Snooker Championship . After he had also reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship and the round of 32 of the U21 Amateur World Championship in 2011 , he moved into the semi-finals of the U21 European Championship in early 2012 . He also took part in two tournaments of the Players Tour Championship with some success . But shortly after his success at the U21 European Championship, he reached the final of the European Championship in 2012 and defeated the Irishman Brendan O'Donoghue 7-3. So he qualified for the Snooker Main Tour . He had also tried to qualify through Q School , but lost to Jamie O'Neill in his group final in the second tournament .
First professional years

Donaldson's first professional season was the 2012/13 season , which consisted on the one hand of several ranking tournaments and on the other hand of numerous tournaments of the Players Tour Championship with limited world ranking influence ( minor ranking tournaments ). Donaldson was particularly successful at the PTC tournaments and thus reached the round of 64 in a good half of all tournaments, in which he was mostly eliminated. He only reached the round of 32 in the Paul Hunter Classic , but then had to admit defeat here too. At the end of the season he was ranked 89th in the world rankings .
The next season went a little better when he reached the quarter-finals and the semi-finals at the PTC tournaments Bulgarian Open and Yixing Open . In addition, he reached the round of 16 and several times the round of the last 32 at both the Wuxi Classic and the Welsh Open, as well as at another PTC tournament missed for the next season. However, since he was one of the best players of the PTC season, he qualified for the next two professional seasons through the Order of Merit of the European partial tour.
In the 2014/15 season , Donaldson could not build on the previous season; he seldom reached the round of 32, often losing his opening game. His best result was a quarterfinal appearance at the Yixing Open , where he survived the round of 32 for the only time in the season. At the end of the season he was ranked 93rd in the world rankings. This negative trend continued in the following season , when he made it to the round of 64 in only four of fifteen tournaments, there twice and in the round of 32 and in Eliminated once in the round of 16. Although he improved to ranked number 82, but again he missed the direct qualification for the next season. But since his good results took place at PTC tournaments, he qualified again via the Order of Merit for two more seasons.
Establishment in the top 64
With the 2016/17 season , the Players Tour Championship was discontinued, but this did not change the high number of tournaments. The season went much better for Donaldson when he reached the round of 64 several times and also survived it four times. While he was eliminated in this round at the Shanghai Masters , he only had to admit defeat in the second round of the European Masters and the Northern Ireland Open . However, he achieved his best result at the Welsh Open , where he defeated several players from the extended world elite and was only eliminated in the semifinals against Judd Trump . In the world rankings this helped him to place him in 65th place. In the next season , however, he lost a series of opening games, but was able to reach the round of the last 64 more often from the second half of the season and moved into the round of 32 and at the UK Championship the Gibraltar Open into the semi-finals. This saved him at number 58 in the world rankings, which meant that he was able to qualify directly for the next season for the first time.
However, Donaldson's form was much better in the 2018/19 season , when he was eliminated from most of the tournaments in the round of the last 64 at the earliest and often only in the subsequent round of the last 32, including the World Snooker Championship . At the Welsh Open and the Indian Open , he was only eliminated in the quarter-finals, whereas at the Paul Hunter Classic and the China Open he reached the semi-finals, but was eliminated there. On the world rankings he jumped to 35th place during the season. The next season was similar ; Until the forced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Donaldson's best ranking tournament results were two quarter-finals at the Scottish Open and the European Masters . In the Championship League , a tournament without world ranking influence, he also qualified with a group victory in group 4 for the final group, in which he again narrowly qualified for the final round of the top 4. There he defeated the reigning world champion Judd Trump before he won his first professional tournament with a white wash over his compatriot Graeme Dott .
