2013

The Arcaden Paul Hunter Classic 2012 was a snooker tournament that was held from 23 to 26 August 2012 in the town hall in Fürth . It was the fourth event of the Players Tour Championship 2012/13 and the first of the Betfair European Tour 2012/13 . It was an official minor ranking tournament of the Main Tour and therefore part of the 2012/13 snooker season . Arcaden Shopping could be won as the new main sponsor , which among other things operates a shopping center in neighboring Erlangen and had already sponsored the tournament in Fürstenfeldbruck on the previous year's tour.

For the second time, Eurosport broadcast the games from table 1 live during the three main days. Unlike in the previous year, the stage area of the hall with the TV table was no longer separated by a movable wall, only access was restricted during the ongoing games. This also made it possible to enlarge the grandstand on one side. As in previous years, nine more tables were spread across the rest of the Fürth town hall and were freely accessible.

The Scot Stephen Maguire and the Chinese Ding Junhui were missing from the top 16 in the world rankings . Last year's star, Ronnie O'Sullivan , was still on his general snooker break. Nevertheless there was a maximum break again this year , old master Ken Doherty achieved his first break of 147 points in the 23rd year of his career. Last year's winner was Mark Selby from England . He reached the final again and prevailed 4-1 against Joe Swail . So he managed to defend his title as the second player after Shaun Murphy in 2009. Even though Swail was still on the main tour until the middle of the year, he was the first amateur to reach the final of the Paul Hunter Classic.

For the first time, an amateur cup took place parallel to the PTC tournament, which is one of four European tournaments in which it is a question of a main tour starting place for the next season. The final was held at a neighboring table at the same time as the semi-final of the main tournament. It was won by the German Patrick Einsle .

Preliminary round

The 32 free places in the main round were awarded in two qualifying rounds on Thursday, August 23rd and on Friday evening, August 24th. For the second round, twelve players were directly seeded, and another 52 participants played the remaining 104 applicants. Five German players survived the qualification, including ex-professional Patrick Einsle and the German-Englishman Phil Barnes, who did so for the second time in a row. In the third attempt, Alexander Ursenbacher also made it into the main tournament, who had become Swiss champion for the first time earlier in the year . The Austrian U-21 champion Andreas Ploner was another successful qualifier.

Again, there were many refusals among the amateurs, eight of the 19 failed qualifying games went to a team from Bahrain that had reported for the first time but had not started.

All qualification games were played on four winning frames (best-of-seven). The respective winners are marked in bold, small. means that the player has moved on to the next round without a fight (by not playing the opponent).

Finals

For six of the seven amateurs from German-speaking countries it was over after the first round, all of whom had professionals drawn as opponents who were too strong for them. Only Phil Barnes moved into round 2 without a fight and was able to beat a professional with Liam Highfield . This made him the first German among the last 32 at a PTC tournament. Highfield had previously created the biggest surprise of the opening round when he had thrown world number three Mark Williams from the tournament.

After that, the dying of favorites continued. The current number 2 Judd Trump , tournament winner two years ago, lost in round 3 to Barry Hawkins , who had previously eliminated Neil Robertson . Stephen Lee was defeated by the Irish veteran Ken Doherty , who, inspired by his maximum break in the previous round, reached a contested 4: 3. John Higgins failed at the Indian new professional Pankaj Advani , who had his first great success at a professional snooker tournament. World number one and defending champion Mark Selby as well as Shaun Murphy and Ricky Walden remained from the top 10 , who made it to the last sixteen.

The finalists Mark Selby and Joe Swail

Sunday then began with competitive duels between the remaining 16 players. Only Barry Hawkins was able to repel the onslaught of the Thai new professional Thepchaiya Un-Nooh pretty quickly and prevail with 4: 1. Michael White beat Dominic Dale 4-2 in a Welsh duel , but then lost to Hawkins. In the second all-Welsh duel, Ryan Day also won 4-2 against Jamie Jones , then faced Advani from India, who had fought Mark King 4-3. Day lost surprisingly clearly 1: 4. The top professionals Murphy and Walden met in the round of 16 on Joe Swail and Andrew Norman , respectively , who had both lost their professional status at the end of the 2011/12 season. Both amateurs were able to prevail and then met directly: The more experienced Northern Irish prevailed just under in the seventh frame. The longest knockout round match was played by Mark Selby and fellow countryman Robbie Williams . They fought each other for three and a half hours until the top favorite prevailed in the decision-making frame, thus delaying the tournament schedule. Although Selby immediately had to face Ken Doherty again, who had also needed seven frames against Michael Wild , he quickly prevailed 4-0, the only to-zero result of the final day.

In the semifinals, two players met with Selby and Advani who had already become world champions in other billiards: the Englishman in 2006 in Blackball and the Indian in 2009 in English Billiards . Advani was able to take the lead, but then Selby pulled away 3-1 and finally won 4-2. The second game of the semifinals was very exciting in front of the camera. Joe Swail took a 2-0 lead, but Barry Hawkins equalized. He was also able to counter the renewed leadership of the Northern Irish. In the decision-making frame it was then nervous and both players missed opportunities to make an early decision. After a few strange balls, all that was left was the black ball that Swail pounded over ties.

Mark Selby got the better start into the final, which took place after only a short break for Swail. The first two frames went to the Englishman after Swail could not build on the semi-final performance. Only in the third frame did he get better into the game, but Selby was able to increase to 3-0 after a fight. Then the Northern Irishman managed the highest break of the final with 89 points, but in the fifth frame Selby managed a high break again and he won 4: 1. The Englishman defended last year's title and his number 1 position in the world rankings. For Swail they were important points in his fight to return to the main tour next year via the PTC rating.

Round 1 to the round of 16

The tournament mode for all games including the final was best-of-seven (four winning frames). The respective winners are marked in bold, small. means that the player has moved on to the next round without a fight (by not playing the opponent).
