Event 4

The UK PTC 3 was a snooker tournament that took place September 5-9, 2012 at the South West Snooker Academy in Gloucester . It was part of the Players Tour Championship 2012/13 and was the third of four UK tournaments in the series.

156 players had registered for the tournament. Tournament mode was best of seven (four winning frames) for all games including the final .

For the first time this season, the entire top 16 in the world rankings competed in a PTC tournament, including Ding Junhui and Ronnie O'Sullivan , who had ended his time-out in Gloucester. The surprise winner was Rod Lawler , who celebrated his first tournament victory on the tour in his 23rd year as a professional.

Preliminary round

98 players had their place in the main round, the other 86 registered played the 30 remaining places on September 5th and 6th. In the first preliminary round 26, in the second preliminary round 30 applicants were eliminated.

All qualification games were played on four winning frames (best-of-seven). The respective winners are marked in bold, small. means that the player has moved on to the next round without a fight (by not playing the opponent).

Finals

The biggest surprise of the first round was the end of Stephen Maguire , who had previously finished first and second at the UK PTCs in Gloucester. His opponent Marco Fu then defeated two other top 10 players, Mark Williams and Ricky Walden . The runner-up in the first tournament, Jack Lisowski , also failed because of the Englishman Zak Surety, who was the only amateur to reach round 3. Reanne Evans , the only female top player, made it into round 2 for the first time in a PTC tournament. Ronnie O'Sullivan's return after his short break was disappointing , with Simon Bedford losing out at the start. The world number one and tournament winner of the Paul Hunter Classic 2012 two weeks earlier lost in round 3 against Dominic Dale from Welsh . Neil Robertson and John Higgins also failed to get past Round 3 for the third time this season. Also, Ding Junhui , who had made himself scarce until then in Europe, lost his third tournament match against Ken Doherty . With Judd Trump , Shaun Murphy and Stephen Lee , only three players from the top ten made it to the final day.

The biggest surprise in the round of 16 was the new professional Chen Zhe , who beat the number 21 in the world rankings 4: 3 with Andrew Higginson . Ali Carter was too strong for him. World number two, Judd Trump, got off to a bad start on Sunday and was eliminated from Robert Milkins . Neither Carter nor Milkins reached the semifinals, however, because Marco Fu and Shaun Murphy retained the upper hand against them in the next round. The man from Hong Kong then surprisingly defeated fourth in the world rankings 4-0 and thus threw the fourth top player out of the tournament.

Martin Gould , who had won the second UK tournament in the same place a month earlier, narrowly lost in the round of 16 to Stephen Lee in the longest game of this round. Rod Lawler , who was only able to stay on the current Main Tour through the Q School , reached a PTC round of 16 for the first time ever, where he defeated a top 16 player 4-3 with Stuart Bingham . He met Lee and in another very long, close encounter he was able to prevail again in the decision-making frame. His semi-final opponent was Dominic Dale. Lawler used the momentum of his winning streak and also prevailed against the Welshman with a clear 4-0.

The final began with a century break by the Englishman, but Marco Fu immediately equalized. In the hard-fought third frame Lawler turned a 40-minute deficit and won the game point by point. Fu then rebalanced himself with a century break. The next frame was more competitive again, Lawler was able to gain a decisive advantage with a middle break that the Chinese could not make up for. In the sixth frame Fu was able to take the lead again, but not a big advantage. Instead, Lawler took the lead in several attempts and was finally able to make the 4-2 win with a 50 break.
