Andreas Ploner (born May 18, 1993 ) is an Austrian snooker player from Innsbruck . He is three times Austrian national champion .

Career

National tournaments

Andreas Ploner started playing snooker at the age of 14 and was also a Tyrolean youth champion. A year later he became the youngest winner of a Grand Prix tournament in Austria. Even as a teenager he was one of the best players in Austria and at the age of 18 he led the national rankings. In 2012 and 2013 there were also the titles of the Austrian U21 champion and the Austrian national champion , which he won both times against Paul Schopf. He lost his third national final to Schopf in 2014, but a year later he won his third title. In 2016 he was unable to defend his title and 15-year-old Florian Nüßle won . Ploner met this in the final of 2017 and lost 2: 5.

Because of the wider competition, he also took part in tournaments of the German Grand Prix. In 2016 he won one of these tournaments against the German champion Simon Lichtenberg in the final 3-1. In two other tournaments he was in the final and lost.

International tournaments

From the beginning, Ploner also competed in international tournaments. This included the European Championship and the World Championship for Amateurs as well as the respective youth competitions. In the first three tournaments from 2009 he failed in the group stage. At the EM 2010 he survived the preliminary round for the first time and lost in the round of the last 32 against the eventual European champion Luca Brecel . He achieved the same result in the following four tournaments, including the 2010 World Cup and the 2011 European Championship . It was not until the U21 European Championship in 2012 that he got one more round to the round of 16, which he lost to Eden Sharav . Even after that, he regularly reached the bottom 32. Once again he surpassed the result at the 2014 European Championship , where he defeated the Irish Josh Boileau in the round of 16 and only just lost 4-5 in the quarter-finals against the Welsh Duane Jones .

He was also successful in other tournaments besides the championships. At the Six Red European Championship 2017 he reached the round of 16 and at the European Snooker Open in the same year he defeated the U18 European champion Tyler Rees and the Irish David Cassidy and only lost to his compatriot Michael Judge in the semifinals . At the domestic 3 Kings Open in Rankweil , defeated the defending champion, Swiss professional Alexander Ursenbacher , 4-0 in the semi-finals and lost the final against German professional Lukas Kleckers 1: 5.

In addition, Ploner also played in tournaments on the professional tour , which were open to amateurs. Until 2016 it was the Players Tour Championship (PTC) with small tournaments all over Europe. In 2012 he survived the amateur qualification for the first time at the Paul Hunter Classic in Fürth and played in the first main round against Shaun Murphy , to whom he lost 4-0. The second time he defeated the Finn Robin Hull , number 69 in the world rankings , 4-2 at the Riga Open in 2014 and reached the round of 64. In the same year he became the first Austrian to qualify for the 6-Red professional world championship . He won against Gareth Allen but was eliminated in the group stage. In 2015 he tried to become a professional himself through the Q School , but dropped out early in the qualifying tournaments. For this he reached the main round in three PTC tournaments the following season. In the next Q School he reached the quarterfinals of his group in the second tournament . At the Gibraltar Open 2017 and 2018 , Pro-Am tournaments on the Main Tour, he reached the main round. He managed another win against a professional at the Paul Hunter Classic 2018 , where he defeated the Egyptian Basem Eltahhan 4-2 and reached round 2.
