The Championship League is an invitation-only snooker tournament hosted by Matchroom Sport . It took place from 2008 to 2016 at Crondon Park Golf Club in Stock ( Essex ), England . 2017 and 2018 were played in Coventry , also in 2019 up to the sixth group, the seventh group and the winners' group were played in Barnsley . In 2019/20 the tournament moved to Leicester . 2020 was played with a new format in Milton Keynes . The current title holder is the Belgian Luca Brecel .
format
The tournament consists of seven groups of seven players each. The first four of each group table play semi-finals and finals and thus determine a group winner. This qualifies for the so-called winners' group . The bottom two of each group table are eliminated from the competition and the remaining four players start again in the next group, where they meet three other players. The group winner of the Winners' Group is then the overall winner of the tournament. This got a place in the following Premier League Snooker until 2012 and since 2013 for the following Champion of Champions .
Two group rounds are played one after the other, so that there are four dates per season. These are usually spread over three months, with rounds 1 and 2 being played in the first or second week of the year and the final in March. In 2019/20 the start was brought forward to the previous October (2019) for the first time, but the final stayed in March (2020).
Special edition 2020
Another Championship League event took place during the 2019/20 season. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, the season was interrupted and the tournament served as preparation for the resumption. It had a new format, with 64 players participating this time. Three phases of group matches were played and there were no knockout matches including the finals, which meant that the winner of the tournament was the winner of the final group.
