The Fosters Professional , formerly also Carlsberg Challenge and Carling Challenge or Carling Championships , was an invitation tournament held between 1984 and 1988 as part of the professional snooker tour . It was held across all five events in the studios of Raidió Teilifís Éireann in the Irish capital Dublin . With two wins each, both the Englishman Jimmy White and the Northern Irishman Dennis Taylor are record winners, Taylor also played the highest break in tournament history in 1987 with a 140 break.
history
For the first time the tournament was held in 1984 under the name Carlsberg Challenge , which it was to keep up to and including 1986. The Carlsberg Brewery was the sponsor of the tournament . From the beginning, only four players who had been invited beforehand took part in each tournament. All games were broadcast on television.
The first two editions were won by the Englishman Jimmy White , until he lost to Dennis Taylor in the 1986 final . A year later, the sponsor Carlsberg decided to pass on the rights to the name to their Carling brand . Taylor was able to defend his title in the finals of the tournament, which was called the Carling Challenge or Carling Championships . In 1988, the tournament was played for the last time, again the name changed to Fosters Professional . The last event won the Englishman Mike Hallett .
