The 1988 Fosters Professional was a snooker tournament that was part of the 1988/89 Main Tour season . It was the only way the tournament was held under the name Fosters Professional , before that it was run under the name Carling Challenge or Carlsberg Challenge . The tournament was discontinued after this event.

The invitation tournament was held in Dublin in October 1988 between four participants. The winner was the Englishman Mike Hallett , who defeated Stephen Hendry 8: 5 in the final. Hendry played the highest break of the tournament with a 99 break in the final and missed a century break by just one point.

Three were Mike Hallett and Stephen Hendry have successively met in a tournament final, three times the Scot had won. Although Hallett won the first frame, Hendry dominated the beginning of the game. Hendry quickly led 4-1, but then came to a standstill. Hallet finally got five frames in a row to 6: 4. Hendry was able to win one more frame before Hallett won the tournament with 66:65 points in the last frame. It was the Englishman's first professional title.
