The New Zealand Masters 1988 was a snooker tournament of the 1988/89 snooker season . It was held in the New Zealand Parliament in July 1988 as the first tournament of the season .

In the final, Stephen Hendry won 6-1 against Mike Hallett , the highest break was played by Joe Johnson . The tournament was sponsored by Lion Brown . Johnson also won the game for third place against Tony Knowles , which is atypical for snooker tournaments .
