The Carlsberg Challenge 1984 was a professional snooker invitation tournament for the 1984/85 season . The tournament was from 14 to 16 September 1984 in the RTÉ Studios in Ireland Dublin discharged. The winner was the Englishman Jimmy White , who defeated his compatriot Tony Knowles 9: 7 in the final. White also played the two highest breaks of the tournament with two 97 breaks.

Prize money

The televised tournament was sponsored by the Carlsberg Brewery , which paid out a total of £ 19,500 , of which just under two-fifths went to the winner.

Tournament course

Four players were invited to the tournament, who played in the knockout system to win the tournament. The semi-finals were played in the best of 9 frames mode, while the final was played over a maximum of 17 frames.

In the finals, number seven met with Jimmy White and number two with Tony Knowles in the world rankings. White had reached the final with a white wash over the Canadian Kirk Stevens , while Knowles had to prevail 5-3 against Alex Higgins .

The first half of the match was largely dominated by Knowles, who took the lead 1: 3, 2: 4 and 3: 5. After that, however, White was able to turn the game around and take the lead 6: 5 before Knowles equalized and led 6: 7. Then White turned the game around again and was able to win with a 70:39 in the 16th frame of the game with 9: 7.
