The Tolly Cobbold English Professional Championship 1985 was a professional snooker tournament without influence on the world rankings in the context of the 1984/85 season for the purpose of determining the English professional champion. The tournament was held from February 5 to 10, 1985 in the Corn Exchange in the English city of Ipswich . The winner was defending champion Steve Davis , who managed a 9-2 victory over Tony Knowles in the final . In return, Knowles played the tournament's highest break with a 139 break .
Prize money
Four years after the first edition of the tournament, the tournament was re-launched as the WPBSA made a grant of £ 1,000 to the prize money for each national professional championship and per player for four years from this year on . Apart from that, the sponsor also changed; now the tournament was sponsored by Tolly Cobbold , who replaced the Tolly Cobbold Classic with this tournament in their portfolio. There was a total of £ 75,000 in prize money, about a quarter of which went to the winner.

Tournament course
A total of 46 players took part in the tournament. 28 of these players started the tournament with a round of the last 48, the winners of which advanced to the round of the last 32, in which they met the remaining 18 participants and in the knockout system played the winner of the tournament. All the games in the tournament were played in the best of 17 frames mode .
final
The defending champion Steve Davis had no problems for much of the tournament, up to and including the quarterfinals he had only lost seven frames. Davis only had problems in the semi-final game against Tony Meo ; the game went to the decider, but Davis won it. His opponent in the final was Tony Knowles , who had started the tournament with a victory in the Decider against Malcolm Bradley , then had clearly won the round of 16 and quarter-finals and only had problems again with his 9: 6 semi-final victory over Steve Longworth .
The final was a clear affair: Davis dominated the game at will, played a century break and let Knowles win just two frames, so Davis won the game 9-2 and with it the tournament. This more or less overlapped with general expectations.
