final
The Englishman John Spencer had been among the best in the world for some time and had won the world championship a few years earlier. At this tournament he started with a clear win over John Dunning , one of the lesser-known participants, and then secured his place in the final with a 2-1 win over eventual runner-up Graham Miles . In this he met the Northern Irishman Jackie Rea , who had already played at a high level in the 1950s and was now in a final again. He had surprisingly defeated the reigning world champion Alex Higgins and then qualified for the final with another win over David Taylor .
Only fragmentary frame results have survived from the finale. So the second frame of the game went to Rea, followed by a frame won by Spencer. All in all, the Englishman won the final 3-2.
