The Zhiyuan Huanbao Yushan World Open (formerly also called Professional Players Tournament , Grand Prix , or LG Cup ) is a professional snooker tournament that is part of the Snooker Main Tour .

history

The tournament was first held in 1982 as the Professional Players Tournament by the WPBSA . In the first edition, Ray Reardon beat Jimmy White 10-5 for a prize of £ 5,000 .

In 1984, Rothmans became a sponsor of the tournament, which was renamed the Rothmans Grand Prix and was held in Reading . In 1993, Škoda became the main sponsor for three years before the tournament had to do without a sponsor between 1996 and 2000. In 2001, LG Electronics took over the sponsorship for a period of three years, during which the Grand Prix was named LG Cup . In 2004 it was called totesport Grand Prix after the new sponsor .

By 2005, every year was the season opener at the Guild Hall in Preston played. From the 2006/07 season the tournament was sponsored by Royal London Watches and took place in 2006 and 2007 in Aberdeen, Scotland, as the second ranking tournament of the season after the Northern Ireland Trophy and the Shanghai Masters . In 2008 the tournament was moved to Glasgow, and it was the third event in the tour calendar this season.

A novelty in 2006 was the group stage, which was held for the first time in a ranking tournament (also in 2007). In the 2007/08 season , the world ranking points awarded at the Grand Prix were raised to 1.25 times that of a normal tournament. As a result, the Grand Prix was upgraded to the third most important snooker tournament after the UK Championship and the Snooker World Championship . In the 2008/09 season , the controversial group stage was abolished again. In order to give the Grand Prix its own character, the pairings were drawn anew after each round, in contrast to all other tournaments.

In 2010 the Grand Prix was carried out under the new name World Open . It was a Pro-Am tournament in which both professionals and amateurs could participate, the latter first having to survive two qualifying rounds. The field of participants increased to 128 players and the match distance was drastically reduced ( best of 9 in the final). In 2012 the changes were reversed and the tournament was moved to Haikou , China , where it was held until 2014 under the name Haikou World Open .

In 2016, the tournament was held in Yushan for the first time , with Allister Carter prevailing against Joe Perry . With sometimes changing and missing sponsors, the Chinese local hero Ding Junhui and the reigning world champions Mark Williams and Judd Trump at the time of their tournament victory were able to win the tournament in the following years . Williams is also next to the Scots Stephen Hendry and John Higgins with four titles record winner of the tournament.
